What the Flyers need to get to the next level/stage can only be obtained through the draft (Absolutely top 3-5 or RARE luck in other rounds).
NO, the Flyers can not obtain these players through trades.
NO, the Flyers will not be able to obtain these players through free agency.
The Rangers, and to a lesser extent the Devils, is where the Flyers WANT to get to. Neither team has won a cup during their current build, but both have the core in place. For them to win the cup it is going to take experience, player growth and finding the right roster mix...and of course some luck.
Both teams have drafted high talent picks, signed some UFA's, made trades that worked in their favor and got help in later round draft picks.
The Flyers are without debate at least 4-5 years away from where the Rangers and NJ are currently at, which is where Flyer fans would be most happy to be at. Every year the Flyers management thinks they can bypass the standard process of building is another year wasted and delays the process.
If the Flyers continue to play bubble hockey year after year...
1) It's going to waste Michkov's career
2) Pittsburgh will probably be able to hit rock bottom, draft high, rebuild and leapfrog the Flyers
The sad part is if that does happen, I will never see the Flyers succeed in my lifetime. - Glak18
This is why this drafy is so important and the Flyers need as many chances as they can get to draft the right players. To this end, Briere needs to trade more veteran players and get more picks in this draft to menuever with. Teams are not going to trade a 1C or 1D to the Flyers, they are going to have to get lucky and draft and develop those players.

Michkov and Kolosov this season. Next season Bonk and Luchanko. Its coming, you have to be patient. Players take time to develop. - jd250

That is because the Flyers don't have the talent Carolina has. As they grow and get in the right players, I think it will look similar. - jd250
not even talking about the talent. I do not see the same style of play. |

has danny added any young talent to this roster since he took over? going to exclude JD as that was somewhat forced or players drafted by the flyers. - login
He DID draft Michkov, but that was a no brain pick in my opinion.

The premise of the blog is laughable. Since 2013 the flyers have won exactly one playoff round.
The went to the playoffs four times in that span.
They have to made the playoffs the last four seasons.
Tortorella can call the team whatever he wants.
What he can’t call the team is a winning team to be emulated.
Michkov is the new Giroux. His talent will be wasted on a team that can’t get through their thick skulls that you need talent from top to bottom to win cups.
Playing hard should be a given for every team. Holy crap your professionals how do you embrace that as your team credo? We worked hard and didn’t quit. The other team won but they knew they were in a battle. But you lost and aren’t making the playoffs for a fifth year and will draft in the teens.
Yeah but dammit we showed other teams we couldn’t be pushed around.
Pfft. Give me a team that doesn’t work as hard but wins cups. |

they have to be in the top 5-10 this season. Move Laughts, Farabee, Hath, take back reclamation project and a pick, bottom out after TDL. That should bring the same result next season, then yea, it is obvious they want to thread the needle with FA and trades after.
what is interesting is the last article I read on 2025 draft was not as good as I thought it would be, there is risk in building through the draft too. |

did you see "laughts" in the picture (along with TK - no captain however) with EJ for his 1000th game? he isn't going nowhere. he is a flyer for life.
they are way more likely to buy if all things remain the same in 2/3 months. |

Very funny Tortorella name dropping yet another team they are emulating. Wasn’t it Vegas according to commentator Jonesy? Then the Blues? Now Carolina? |

But they also have Barkov (#2), Tkachuk (#6), Reinhart (#2), Ekblad (#1), Forsling, and a few more players that actually have top tier talent and production.
Talent matters more than anything and the Flyers wont get it drafting in the middle every year.
edit: Leight - MBFlyerfan
Luck is also needed. Lucky Bob was available to sign. Lucky Forsling turned out so well, lucky Verhaghe was able to replace Hunerdeau (who just had a great season before being traded). Lucky Quennville was replaced. Lucky Tkachuk was available to trading for.

TANKTANK TANK TANK TANK
Using Toronto as an example of why not to is laughable and pathetic.
Toronto was able to acquire a core that gives the team hope and has made them relevant year after year. Their playoff failures are multi-faceted but the bottom line is they have been, still are and will be better positioned to challenge for the Cup than the Flyers have been in over 2 decades
Getting the talent is the priority and Ill take my chances assembling the rest of the pieces |

Their Vezina Trophy goalie has not got them to the cup. Missed pretty much al of last season and will miss a lot of this season.
Carolina has talent but not enough talent. In the end their former GM failed to get enough talent to win them a cup - WhiskeyMan
Which goaltender are you speaking of?
I am talking about Bob the goalie.

Again more picks doesn't mean better.
Sure, it increases the chance of getting more assets and even a higher chance of one becoming an impact player, which is great for building a lacking prospect pool.
BUT the Flyers NEED guaranteed high ceiling/talent picks that make an impact almost immediately, not 3-5 years of developing. That is top of the top of the top of the draft.
Briere is not going to accomplish a Sedin trade up the ladder deal...it's just not going to happen.
Even if the Flyers finish dead last, still doesn't guarantee a #1 pick, but it guarantees a good spot or better chance to get that top pick.
In my mind the Flyers had 5 years (current stage) and they are now in year 4. So far they have gotten Michkov. The next two drafts they need to add an impact player in the category of Michkov or higher to even think about playoffs in the next 10 years. |

Directionless... as has been the case for well over a decade now.
The Flyers essentially are the 35 year old guy living in mom & dad's basement because they just can't seem to figure out what to do with their life. |
