Now I can finally answer. I pretty much agree with your post. Just to be clear, I was talking about the Mayfield of today, not a few years from now. The last couple of years of his contract could be terrible. But right now, I'm not sure you could find many veteran d-men for a $3.5 MM cap hit who would be a major upgrade.
