I think having a younger guy as GM is advantageous because the agents run the league. It’s no longer an old school boys club and I think Lou’s probably had a hard time dealing with younger agents. Who the hell wants to deal with his rules? It’s a different player nowadays. The old school bullying isn’t working. No kid nowadays wants to be told to shave or be basically given a number.

It is a new NHL. Players are different. It's a more speed and skill league as well. You cannot do things that may have worked years ago the same way.

Maclean has 9 lives……that guy still running the PP is fascinating. Also, father son on the same team isn’t a good thing imo

Head coach should sink or swim with their own people. It's another form of control by the GM.

Garbage:

Maxim Tsyplakov will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday.

The New York Islanders forward is facing discipline for a high hit on Philadelphia Flyers center Ryan Poehling on Thursday.

The incident occurred at 8:14 of the first period in the Islanders' 5-3 loss at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. Poehling sustained an upper-body injury on the play. Tsyplakov was not assessed a penalty.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: illegal check to the head. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review
.

So Toronto reviews this play and determines NO PENALTY only to have NHL Player Safety undermine them and schedule a hearing. This is why NHL officiating and discipline is a joke. Even the Flyers announces Jim Jackson and Brian Boucher, who spent a solid period and a half female doging about the hit, eventually agreed it was 'legal'. The initial and primary point of contact was clearly shoulder to shoulder, which then slid up to the head. Sorry Flyers fans, no matter how many still shots of the shoulder to head you show, that was a legal hit.

I honestly wonder if, assuming Lou is done after the season, they don't consider Roy for the job and look for a new coach. Roy was the coach/GM of his junior team and, I believe, has been interested in a management role in the past.
- eichiefs9

There has been a fair amount of speculation over time that this was precisely why Roy took the job. This is also why many believe we've seen a calmer, gentler Roy. I have mixed feelings about Roy at this stage. He has naturally inherited a team that is getting older, slower and clearly has major character flaws. Additionally, Lou's refusal to let Roy select his own staff has been a strange move and likely made things more difficult. (in what world does McLean still have a job?)
That said, Roy has shown me NOTHING in terms of getting this team to maximize their potential. Quite the opposite. While I didn't like Lambert and welcomed his exit, I would say the team has actually been WORSE since Roy took over.
I wouldn't complain if an incoming GM kept Roy for a season or two, just like I wouldn't complain if Roy did in fact move to the front office, but I'm far more skeptical of Roy's ability to coach this team to success than I was when he first joined.

I read earlier that the referees reveiw major penalties and they were ultimately the ones to make the call that there was no penalty on the play. So the league came to the decision to have a hearing on their own, this wasn't the league deciding something last night only to change their mind today.

Either way, (frank)ing dumb. It was a clean hit, but I'm sure they'll cite some blindside horsepoop which any hit would have been because Poehling was staring at his own skate laces.

Yeah, I'll saw Rosner stated it was the officials decision, which is sort of strange because I had heard in the past that those reviews go to TO. This remains a disparity between the officials and player safety, who clearly are not always playing from the same sheet of music.
I'm also willing to bet that if Ovechkin and thrown that hit, player safety wouldn't have blinked.

Of course not.

I loved the Philly broadcast saying that it was "completely unnecessary to deliver that hit", as if he wasn't 5ft from the net with nobody around him and about to shoot the puck

You knew it was coming when they scheduled the hearing. It's amazing how many times we've seen our guys get waxed by a dirty hit only to watch Player Safety glaze over or fine then fir a first time offense. Tsyplakov is a first time offender on a very borderline (actually legal) hit yet gets three games

Domi’s hit to the head of George was much worse in my opinion. Tsyp’s hit was called a 5 minute major and then reversed after review. (By the refs on the ice. I understand Toronto did not.)
Today Toronto says it was a hit to the head worthy of a 3 game suspension
NHL needs to get their shat together!
The NHL just called last nights refs incompetent.

If the referee makes the call on the ice with regards to penalties. Thats is it. If it is called a penalty and supplemental discipline is warranted, then it gets reviewed.

If the league is going to penalize the players after the fact of a non-called. Shouldn't the on-ice officials receive the same discipline.

Part of what makes the game exciting is the human element.

On a side note, the head was not the point of initial contact. It was the shoulder and chest. Glancing to the head. Also, I have absolutely no respect for the Department of Player Safety, they are the most inconsistent part of this league. Their decisions are totally bias.

I didn't. I thought it was just window dressing to show that they were concerned.

It sucks that Poehling got hurt, but it wasn't a dirty hit. There was no intent to injure. Tysp kept his elbows down and didn't leave his feet. He didn't launch himself. If he's getting 3 games, then what about the multiple Flyers literally attacking him for the rest of the game. Those were intentional and malicious. It's just absolute bullpoop.

1000%. One Flyer crosschecked him 5 or 6 times in the kidneys when he was tied up with the other player and the refs. If that wasn't intent to injure, I don't know what is.

Yup. As long as this jerk is the Director of Hockey Operations, the Islanders will continue to get dumped on. He has hated the franchise since his playing days, when they eliminated his teams from the playoffs. Then his association with the Rangers cemented his feelings.

Yeah, Nelly had a nice finish. I guess compared to the rest of the team (with a few exceptions), Duclair looks pretty fast.
