Patrick Kane hasn't had a great year so far in Detroit which makes him a potential trade candidate. With Todd McLellan at the helm now, it's possible the Red Wings can turn their season around and make their way into the playoffs; but for the sake of conversation, let's say that Patrick Kane is on the market.
Eklund just linked Kane to the Sabres, but I just can't imagine Kane would want to go to a worse team just because he grew up in Buffalo. He's in the twilight of his career, and if he got another shot to make a deep run, it would be with a legit contender. Two teams come to mind: The Colorado Avalanche and the Washington Capitals.
The Caps have a solid core and have been on a roll this year. They do, however, need a better third line. Lars Eller, Jakob Vrana, Taylor Raddish, and Hendrix Lapierre have all played OK, but there is definitely room for improvement.
Lapierre was just sent back down to the Bears with Eller coming off IR, which leaves Ivan Miroshnichenko waiting as a healthy scratch. If the Caps were interested in beefing up that third line, Patrick Kane could fit in nicely for a potential Cup run.
The pieces going back, however, could include a decent draft pick and a roster player. One name that comes to mind is Sonny Milano. He's been on LTIR most of the year, but once healthy, he will be on the trade block. He just hasn't fit in like the Caps had hoped, and it's time for a change of scenery. The kid can play when surrounded with similar players, but the chemistry isn't present here in DC.
Another player that could potentially be available is Andrew Mangiapane. He's been OK this year with the Caps, but only signed a one year deal. Detroit would probably benefit from a player like Mangiapane more than the Caps can. He's been a great fill in player with Ovechkin out, but now that the Captain is back, Mangiapane probably won't get as many chances to showcase what he was capable of in Calgary. He has 8 goals in 35 games which is on par with the 14 he scored last year; a far cry from the 35 he scored a few years ago.
Kane has similar stats to Mangiapane, but Kane's experience and PP ability would be a huge boost to the Caps already strong core.
Anyway, it's a stretch, but not out of the realm of possibility. What do you all think? Thanks for reading. |
