back in the da mix

will they still be there by the TDL?

- Symba007

I still think they made deals, even if close, that make sense for next year+ rather than hold on to what they have (or even buy). Of course being a buyer for a player(s) that would help now as well as long-term would be ideal.

yes, deferred payments allows the cap hit to be a little lower.

Signed for 3yrs, 18M, instead of a 6M cap hit, they get a 4.57M cap hit. Giving 1.43M a year cap space for Anaheim.

Vattrano says he will move out of California eventually to a lower tax state.

Do they even need the cap space right now? That is the head scratching part to me... they will likely need the cap space down the road.

Maybe they want cap flex for deadline deals, dunno. But looks like they currently have $32M.

Strange.

Marner's going to sign for 10mil x8 and do a solid to his favourite childhood team like all of the other GTA stars do historically.

that's part nobody understand, the timing of this move, it's not like they are the Leafs right against the cap in a high tax market in immediate desperate need of cap relief.

Yeah, I had to check to see if they were up against the cap or something, but they are nowhere close! Seems strange for them to do.... maybe that is what Vetrano wanted and they gave it to him.

Can't see how that is a Ducks ask.

Aside from head hunting in the summers to come, I guess they want to sign their young guys to long term "potential" style deals like Slaf/Stutzle/Sanderson etc.?

Yes, but lower cap hit for the 3 years so if you give 3 guys 8mil deals you don't feel it.

Who knows. Maybe Vatrano would prefer getting a paycheck in retirement in Nashville or Florida instead of a lump sum.

some agents didn't think it was that good of a deal either way

Assuming inflation rate of 2% per yr for 10 yrs and invested funds in a SP500 index fund rises 7% per yr compounding annually (the time value of money), this is a questionable tax strategy. A player (even paying CA income tax) could well end up better off not deferring.

More likely it is not in Walsh's interest (financially) to see these type of deals.
