Actually, they take on 3. draft picks and prospects aren't on NHL contracts.
I might have had fun writing up this ridiculous trade, which is not meant to be serious, btw, but at least I can count. - TroyTech
You obviously have no idea how a teams reserve list works. Every player you listed going to Vancovuer, except Cowan who is slide eligible. Would have to go on Vancouver's reserve list.

My Unrealistic (but fair) Trade offer
A third team would make this trade more realistic, but the cap situation works more or less for both teams with LTIR, and the contract limit is not exceeded.
To Toronto:
Elias Pettersson (C) – $9.6M AAV (with $2M retained by Vancouver, effective cap hit $7.6M for Toronto)
Filip Hronek (D) – $4.4M AAV
Vincent Desharnais (D) – $775K AAV
Total Incoming Cap Hit: $12.775M
To Vancouver:
Morgan Rielly (D) – $7.5M AAV
Ryan Reaves (RW) – $1.35M AAV
Connor Dewar (C) – $800K AAV
Jani Hakanpaa (D) – $1.5M AAV
Nicholas Robertson (LW) – $875K AAV
Pontus Holmberg (C) – $800K AAV
Fraser Minten (C) – $894K AAV
Easton Cowan (LW) – $870K AAV
2025 1st Round Pick
2025 2nd Round Pick
Total Outgoing Cap Hit: $14.619M
Why Each Team Does This Trade
For Toronto:
Elite Center Depth: Acquiring Elias Pettersson gives Toronto an unmatched 1-2 punch down the middle with Matthews and Pettersson.
Defensive Reinforcement: Filip Hronek bolsters the top pairing, while Vincent Desharnais adds affordable, physical depth to the blue line.
Stanley Cup Push: Toronto is all-in on its championship window, sacrificing futures to build a powerhouse lineup for immediate success.
For Vancouver:
Rebuild with Premium Assets: The 1st and 2nd round picks, along with high-potential prospects Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan, provide a strong foundation for the future.
Roster Flexibility: Morgan Rielly anchors the defense, while affordable forwards like Robertson and Holmberg add depth and scoring potential.
Cap Flexibility: Retaining $2M on Pettersson is manageable while gaining valuable assets and balancing the roster.
Toronto Maple Leafs Updated Roster
Matthew Knies Auston Matthews Mitch Marner
William Nylander Elias Pettersson Alexander Nylander
Max Pacioretty John Tavares Bobby McMann
Steven Lorentz David Kämpf Max Domi
Extras: Calle Järnkrok, Kyle Clifford
Filip Hronek Chris Tanev
Jake McCabe Simon Benoit
Oliver Ekman-Larsson Vincent Desharnais
Extra: Philippe Myers
Goalies
Starter A: Anthony Stolarz
Starter B: Joseph Woll
he issue with this trade proposal, in my opinion, is that Vancouver wouldn't need Rielly if they were committing to a rebuild. If they wanted to compete now, the young assets included in the deal wouldn’t provide immediate help.
However, if Vancouver chose this route, they could fully embrace a rebuild by trading Miller and flipping Rielly. That would net them even more future assets while they tank for a couple of years to reset.
Alternatively, they could choose to remain competitive. Young talent develops much faster today than it did 20 years ago. Robertson could break through this season or next, and Cowan could step up within the next year or two. Additionally, Vancouver has the cap space to bolster their roster and stay competitive while incorporating young talent. - TroyTech

Play GM you ask Ek. Okay. As Canuck GM if anyone is trying to pry EP40 away they would have to blow my socks off. That’s a top 6 young C and a young top 4D plus your 1&2nd.
So you get why it’s not happening. |

Again, it's a salary cap problem, and believe you me, the above isn't going to get it done. Probably not even close.
Philly HAS to get rid of a roster centerman, and salary in the trade.

Problem for Philly is they need to get out of Couturiers contract but no one would take that on so beyond that, who is going to get included in a potential trade that has value? The only one I can see is Konecny but it appears philly isn't interested in trading him for some reason.

Frost, and Farabee or Risto plus a 1st (they have three 1sts in the 2025 draft) for Pettersson.

To Carolina - Elias Petterson
To Vancouver - Martin Necas, Jesperi Kotkaniemi

They're going to need to give up both Risto AND Farabee to be under the cap with Petterson. Frost needs a change of scenery, so sure, throw him in there, too, he's not working out in Philly, so no need to keep him around any longer.
Throw in a first.
I'd do that trade, and hopefully DB sees it that way, too.
That would give Philly a little wiggle room with cap space, they get rid of a couple of players that Vancouver could actually use, gets Vancouver a 1st round draft pick, and Philly gets a center that could play with Michkov, because Lord knows we don't have one now. |

Agree 100%. I know Couturier is a decent player, but his contract is an albatross, and even if he did waive his NTC, Philly can't afford to retain any more salary.

It would not be a salary cap issue. They can place Ellis on LTIR to make the deal work cap wise. I agree, that offer isn't going to get it done
