Nobody was nearly as bad as the top line, tonight not even close.
It's not a big deal but let's not pretend this was an entire team sucked game, it wasn't as the depth lines were nowhere near the problem the top line was.
The fact Domi was a + in a 6-2 loss tells you all you need to know.
Willy and JT were -1.
L1 stunk, no way to sugar coat it.
Woll wasn't great either but he shouldn't have to be every game with the talent on this team. - Cush29
Leafs started great. The first ten minutes of the game they domiated the Canes completely. The two softies let in by Woll took the wind right out of the sails. Winning streak ends at five, not the end of the world. Woll and the team need to be better and they will be. Leafs need to shoot more and pass less. Leafs missing Stolarz big time. No big changes required. Robertson scored a beauty and was good.

It was a winning streak but their play through it was suspect too often. They have demonstrated, at times, this year that they can be a well rounded team without having to rely on the goaltender to get the job done. At times their 5v5 play throughout this first half has been very, very impressive with suspect special teams holding them back. There has been, which is a consistent characteristic of this group, a complete inconsistency with their play though. Like I'd bet they haven't played more than three good games in a row all year.
Their PK has certainly given them a boost, and really there was a 4 game stretch where you could look at that PP and think, "That's what we need." The Power Play is operating at 21.1% which is good for 18th in the league - but if you remove that 4 game stretch in November, the power play is 16.7%, which would be 28th in the league - which, honestly, is how it feels when you watch it. It's poor, slow, lacks mobility and is all-too-often predictable or disjointed and disorganized. If the Leafs want to see greater success here, they should be seeking to replace Marc Savard in-season - at least in this specific duty. He's tried everything he knows and none of it is working.
Obviously having Tanev and OEL on D has really helped - and McCabe has grown as well and is playing quite well. His absence is completely noteworthy. Getting top-5 goaltending has never hurt anyone! I love the addition of Lorentz and what he brings every single game. Marner has played well almost all season and has been the team's best player not wearing goalie gear, and it would be unfair to omit the play of Tavares for most of the season as well - but like the team as a whole, other important players - like Nylander (he's always been streaky, so this is a blip), Matthews, Knies (probably too young and bit unfair to lump him in here) and Rielly have embodied the inconsistency we see in this team - not only from game to game, but infuriatingly from shift-to-shift.
Quite simply, and I know I go a long way to get here, the two guys who are real leaders on this team that stand out as not doing their job to lead the way, show effort every shift, and work for their team are Matthews and Rielly. I sincerely expect more out of both of them (not even production - specifically the results).

A 1st line hasnt been -17 in a game since 2003's stefan/heatley/kovi did it.
I never read much into +/- stats at all but thats gotta be worth a little golf clap, no?

Tough to grind out offense against Staal/Martinook/Slavin at the best of times, they just don't usually have Svechnikov with them to help counterpunch themselves.
It's fine. Leafs are fine. Play this game in Toronto where Canes can't create a hard matchup and Toronto wins without any real concerns.

Total revisionist history.
I’m right about almost everything, and I’m right about Berube not liking Nylander.
I’m mostly right about how good Marner is.
During last summer I was saying Mitch deserves $12.5M minimum. You guys all had a nuclear meltdown. Now he’s getting at least $13.5M. You weirdos were saying “gIvE hIm nO mOrE tHaN WiLl-EeEEeee”
So dumb.
Mitch is a front runner for the Hart. Could win the Art, Selke, MTV music video awards, a Nobel prize.

The Canes look really good. (frank)in’ flying out there.
Built the way a team should be. Although goaltending and the lack of physicality might prove to be their Achilles heel.

Like Monkey said, Willy and Mitch both bring different elements to the roster and the team is better for having both of them. Leafs would be worse off if they traded either one.
Having said that, always keep your ears open as a GM. If someone makes an offer you can't refuse, then don't refuse it. But, the return would have to be game-changing and I doubt you are getting that kind of offer for either of them.
Mitch will become the highest paid Leaf, even if it's only temporary until Papi signs his next deal. Frankly, we can debate whether he's worth it, but it's gonna happen if he's not traded or allowed to walk.
Another thing to get used to : JT is gonna resign for money and term that will be divisive as well. I could honestly see JT leaving before Willy or Mitch, but I don't think that happens either.

Big thing right now is the PP isn't really clicking without Gostisbehere. He's skating again, but they need to figure out a way to create offense without him and none of the other D have been able to fill that spot adequately.
Also, as far as physicality goes, they're getting Carrier back soon, which will help, and also they've got this big mean Russian bastard that's going to be joining them in time for the playoffs.

Hmm.. 23 with 0 NHL games.
We’ll see. Might just be another Ozhiganov. - Arctic_AARDVARK
Couldn't get out of his KHL contract. When you're the captain of Putin's favourite team they don't let you leave early no matter how much money the NHL team throws your way.

Also Nikishin had more points in his age 21 season than Ozhiganov had in his entire KHL career at 23.
