They won 6-0. - landros 2
To me, that ultimately went the Ducks way in the long run. Although I would be bothered by how non-competitive the Ducks were as a whole if I was them.

No argument…Guathier was virtually invisible all game and did not want to engage in anything physical….it sticks out like a sore thumb when the game itself was very physical. That said…Guathier is soon to be 21, and has a half a season of his pro career under his belt. He, like all rookies will need to figure some things out, but he has all the raw skill to become a good if not very good NHL player. I did see him go to the front of the net several times, and in the 3rd period he seemed to attempt to engage.
It was a tough spot for him, one he brought on himself. If he does have an attitude issue, the NHL has a way of straightening those things out. I will always be disappointed in the Flyers for not getting that circumstance figured out…regardless of what I now think of him the organization was hurt…at a time the can’t afford to be hurt if they want to get to a competitive level. - landros 2
nah he is a bust. look at all he games he has played. no way he will amount to anything.
when the flyers drafted him, he was he cornerstone and building block. gave themselves a barry horowitz. they were smart drafters. many said how great he was, now it is how bad he is because he isnt a flyer. flyers fans rule. |

With the additions of Trouba and extension of Vatarano the willingness to accumulate assets for a rebuild appear to be over. I believe this is year 3 for Verbeek. I think he has over played his hand with Zegras. That asset continues to depreciate. I expect Verbeek to make more moves to tweek his roster. He probably gets 1 more year to have them as a playoff contender. |

I don't think that signals that at all. I think the reason for acquiring a player like Trouba was due to what we saw on display last night. The level of competitiveness of their team. If their management group thinks that he has one more year to have them in the playoffs. They're not a good management group.

But the same doesnt apply when the Flyers sign Vets. Got it. Intangibles only matter for other teams

Out of the Flyers 18 wins on the season. Only 3 of those teams have been good teams.

Of course it does. It's why I advocated for the Flyers to re-sign Couturier. Each team is an individual and different team. Each team has different needs and different counts in terms of veterans versus young players. Does the team have a younger player ready to play in the NHL. Ready to take on a role or do they need a vet fill in. There is a correct balance between needing vet/intangibles versus youth and it's different for every team. You really don't understand this stuff, do you?

That is a crock. You vouched for resigning Coots because he was a top player on our team. He was our #1 C. The signing aged poorly because of the back issues he had a year or two after the signing

Your argument is again weak. I discussed wanting to re-sign Couturier extensively and a big part of why I wanted him re-signed, versus trading him. Remember, many thought they could get high assets for him, which automatically implies that he was a top player in most eyes. Was that I thought the Flyers would face a development issue. Having to overplay and move younger players up in role and responsibility when they weren't ready for it. For example I didn't think Frost would develop well if he was thrust into a 1C role when he wasn't ready for it. It was a case of weighing the trade value versus the multiple reasons why I wanted him re-signed. One of which of course he was a good player. Who would want a player who wasn't a good player re-signed at all for the money and term it would take?
Again, you're not very good at this are you? So to reiterate, Im not at all against a team like the FLyers having some veteran support. I have posted extensively that a team needs some of that. It's about balance and playing younger players when you can. The Flyers cater to vets too much in my opinion and it leads to player like Andrae and Lycksell being blocked out,

Unfortunately Couturier has never really been the type of vet leader that inspires young players. He’s a very quiet guy off the ice and a conscientious, solid, but boring player in the ice. I think he’s more the type of player that coaches like (with the exception of Tortorella) than a player other players love. He did seem to make an effort at the start of this season to fire the team up with a few fights and aggressive play, but that’s not really who he is and that part of his game has faded along with the rest of it as the season has progressed. Of course Torts did his best to undermine his authority with his teammates by benching shortly after giving him the “C” and taking him off the PP and PK and moving him down the lineup this season. |

I have two points. I wasn't looking for inspiration from him. I was looking for him to take on the hard matchups and the tough spots in games so younger players didn't have to. Secondly, I don't know how he is off the ice or in the locker room.

There were plenty of interviews with teammates around the time that they gave him the C. It seemed to be what they all said about him. It seemed to me to be one of the reasons it took him so long to get the C. As I added to my comment above; Of course Torts did his best to undermine Couturier’s authority with his teammates by benching shortly after giving him the “C” and taking him off the PP and PK and moving him down the lineup this season |

Every player leads in his own way. I think it's likely, even probable that Couturier's demeanor is quite different among his teammates behind closed door than with the public face he puts out. How long it took to put the C on him was just a part of Tortorella's manipulation

This is more of the same along the lines of Tortorella was the hands down winner of the Jack Adams award

With some luck the Flyers traded a high level asset for a competent 2nd pair d. - landros 2
Risto is the Flyers best defenseman, its indisputable at this point! He is a legitmate top 4 defenseman that playoff bound teams will covet at this year's deadline. |

I truly felt at BC Will Smith, Ryan Leonard and Parreault were all better, more impactful players than Guathier was. You could clearly see Gauthier could skate, has a quick shot release, and a shoot first mentality, so I can see why the Flyers selected him. But I also had concerns he was getting all the hype when to me there were players at BC that were clearly better than he was.
But with all said, the thing that bothers me the most about Gauthier is just what he said the day before the game yesterday, that he wishes the fans knew the truth. I presume this means his side of the story. Yet 1 year later we still have not heard his side of the story and he was once again reluctant to speak about it this weekend. The Flyers certainly had no problem telling their side of the story. You would think after that he would fire back with his truth. But alas he remains silent. So how can someone genuinely state he wishes the fans knew the truth, but then once again refuse to tell his side of the story? Perhaps its because he has no truth to stand on? Perhaps its because what the Flyers released is what actually happened, and all Gauthier would be doing is lying? The kid does have a lot to learn, and frankly I think he got a few lessons last night. I have no problem routing against a player while they are playing, like Crosby, but when its time for him to retire the Flyer fans will give him a standing O, because he deserves it. He was one of the best players in history and off the ice a great embassador of the game. Gauthier, right now anyway, has serious character issues and for his sake I hope he acknowledges and corrects them before its too late. |
