If they trade Pettersson they're going into full rebuild, something they don't want to do, and, they will probably see Quinn Hughes walk away into free agency in two years because of that. Allvin was obviously pissed off when he spoke about the nonsense going on in the locker room but he was really unserious about trading Petey IMO.
Trading headcase Miller on the other hand, now that's a different story...Miller must go. - Pacificgem
Agreed. If they trade Petey, it'll more than likely be a full rebuild, unless someone truly overpays for him. But that's doubtful.
Do a quick reset trading Miller, and work out the defense in the offseason. If they get a young 2-ish C plus top 4 D in trading Miller, and then graduate Willander for next season, that's a whole new top of the defense next year. |

This is true, but it shows what other fans think Pouty may be worth. - Reubenkincade
Fans always overrate their own players, Canuck fans no different. But Pouty’s stats can’t be ignored. If you trade him you must expect equal value, equal potential, or at least receive players who fill glaring holes in the team’s roster. That Winnipeg trade offer did none of that. |

Trading you're number one center isn't just about Pettersson's current worth, it's more involved than that, it's about the franchise, where they currently are and where they want to be next year. Considering the eight years of crap they went through with Jim Benning, I just don't see them wanting to go back into that rebuilding space. |

You just NEVER get full value when trading the best player under duress, it's rare. Unless they get a #1 center back, which is highly unlikely unless it's a deal that has a lot of players involved, you're in a losing situation and you're going to be taking a further step back. |

You also have to take into account the President and GM. I don't think Rutherford has ever fathomed a rebuild in any sense |

100% - those guys are gonna want to get back around that 109 point space they found themselves in last year as soon as possible. Rutherford and Allvin are not interested in rebuilding with futures, potential and picks, especially with Quinn Hughes where he is. |

Only situation it could work is a team like Buffalo that's also in duress. Petey for Cozens and Power or something |

Sometimes futures, potentials and picks can get you the pieces you need to compete. 3 way trades aren't super rare. Trade Miller for futures, trade futures for help now. |

Yes, that's a situation where you're getting an actual top six center to remain competitive and a kid who went first overall and has tremendous potential to become a great defenceman. This is a plausible deal. It addresses the present and the future.
Now, personally I don't think they're going to be competitive with Cozens, but at least it's workable and addresses some of the defense. With D-Petey, Willander and Power, along with Quinn Hughes, you're future looks good back there for a long time. |

Sometimes you need to give up a player to fill those holes, unfortunately that proposal didn't offer a good defenseman, so it is a non-starter. It did offer speed, which both nhl players provide.
Just thought I would throw it out there though. |

Very true, if there's multiple things at play, sure, they could stay in a competitive window but it's just so hard to make trades with a salary cap let alone multiple team deals. |

Ya, it's not perfect, just something along the lines of the (over)payment I'd want the Canucks to get if they're trading Petey. In that situation they'd have to be pretty certain Miller can keep up his 1C play for another 2 seasons, while Conzens can grow into that role and take it over as Miller slides back down. Or spend more assets to be competitive. But, having this as your top 4 D looks good:
Hughes - Willander
Power - Hronek |

Would this be necessary if teams would stop overpaying some players?
Every million dollar overpayment is just a million less to acquire a better player.
Same problem Jim Benning had. |

Hell ya he does. The team's inability to start a game with urgency is as much on him as it is the players. |

Most telling quote from Tocchet's interview with Imac:
