Totally agree on Jays office defecating the bed repeatedly, I also don't put the Jays into the small market category at all - just a terrible managed team really.
One problem is that when those small market clubs go on quality runs it's often a one and done or a couple and done because the players who drastically overperformed vs their salary want the huge $'s and move on to the big players (like the Dodgers).
It's frustrating to see teams do great jobs drafting and developing players to then feel like feeder teams to the big boys is all. - Cush29
If you ever want to go down an internet rabbit hole, read Moneyball (as opposed to just watching the movie) and then do an internet search of people who disagree with everything written in Moneyball.
It's pretty fascinating stuff. |

I always like when teams sign the guy who puts up most of his numbers against them and then wonder why he doesn't put up numbers as good as he used to.
Santander has hit more home runs against the Jays than he has against anyone else in the league - and it's not Skydome - because he only has 6 there and 2 at Sahlen field. He hits well against the Jays in Baltimore.
For the record I sort of like Santander as well, though. He compares pretty evenly to a guy like Teoscar. - Monkeypunk
being a switch hitter is a good bonus to signing him.
but hope for 35ish hr, 800ops, 125 ops+
watch him get 25 hr, 700/105 |

So like, my living room, or anywhere else where I can be found, ever. - Aetherial
My wife only charges me $1.50 per hot dog, so my living room is actually cheaper than going to a game. |

Santander is a Jay
Go get me Bregman and a pitcher and I am content and will watch next season
Need another big FA though, can not just be Santander - Santo_44

well sure, but they had to wait for their tops targets to move off the board first.
the 1st girl they asked to the prom said no, so they are asking thier backup options to go instead - senstroll
First was never gonna happen.
So for your analogy, they still get to go the prom and still have a chance of bumping uglies post dance.....or least getting to 3rd base. |

The last 2 years has taught me to not be picky.
Just get some players that will provide wins. No Justin Turners. |

on top of the $$ cost alone..
Shi Davidi
@ShiDavidi
Anthony Santander received and rejected a qualifying offer from Orioles. Because Blue Jays slid under CBT last year, their penalty for signing such an FA is losing their second-highest draft pick this year and $500K in international bonus pool room for 2026 period.
Ben Nicholson-Smith
@bnicholsonsmith
The Santander deal pushes the Blue Jays' 2025 payroll above the second CBT threshold of $261 million (approximately $263 million at this point). |

so, yeah. Id expect the springer like decline here also
‪Eno Sarris‬ ‪@enosarris.bsky.social‬
I guess it’s in line with the new reality of the price of a win ($11-12 million), but I don’t love this Santander deal. Real chance he’s a below average player (and a dh) in the middle of the deal. |

From Sportsnet:
"The Blue Jays are hoping the 30-year-old outfielder helps a club that has star players Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entering their final year of club control. Toronto finished last in the AL East last year at 74-88."
86 wins got the final wild card.
I love optimism, but this just doesn't seem like we are going to be watching Zezzie scarf $2 hot dogs in October.

Might be more likely they waive/move a couple of small contracts and get themselves under the $261M tax threshold.

the 74-88 is meaningless at this point. the bullpen imploded and was the worst in mlb by a lot. they were out of it and moved out pieces and played rookies and minor leaguers for 60 games. along with a lot of other things all going wrong
i think before the santander deal they were projected 84ish wins. a few moves and 87-90 wins is in sight.
this was from Jan 10, from fangraphs projections
If you ignore my direct threats of violence and add up the WAR on the depth chart, you get around 87-88 wins. But with the team’s depth, especially the starting pitching, ZiPS gives the Jays something more along the lines of 84 or 85 wins right now. |

Here’s the winning formula:
1) Gimenez
2) Bichette
3) Guerrero
4) Santander
5) Springer
6) Varsho
7) Kirk
8) Wagner
9) Clement |
