Pettersson just kinda feels like the kind of thing Lou would figure out a way to do. Maybe Nelson gets moved first and then they use some of the assets from that deal to acquire Pettersson. They'd have to get creative to make the money work, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. |

Totally with you on this.
It’s a great way to replace Nelson’s production and get younger with the upside of surpassing Nelson’s production. Having Bo on the Island who has played with Pettersson only makes this even more intriguing. There’s been a lot of smoke around this for a while. For me I don’t want to lose Barzal but would be willing to make Dobson part of a deal.
Get it done Lou. |

Pettersson has not been playing great, if you read the article the general idea is that it won't take Barzal and possibly might not even take Dobson to pry him out of there. It's pretty telling when Jim Rutherford says that they might not even get back a 2C for EP40.
I don't know what the Isles can realistically offer, maybe a 1-for-1 with Dobson gets it's done, but if they can land Pettersson at a discount that dramatically accelerates a retool if they can move out some other pieces and keep a first round pick and maybe another one (from a hypothetical Nelson trade). |

Interesting indeed. Lotta rumors around this. If you can parlay Nelson into EP40 I think it’s a no brainer.
One thing of note is the 4 nations tournament, which could lead to injuries. I’m shocked the league allows this. It could totally screw over an NHL team if a star player gets injured. The insurance has to be enormous. |

100% agree. Would love to see it get done.
I wonder if Dobson’s injury put a snag in this and would have been done already? |

Who knows, it's all speculation at this point but it doesn't seem so far fetched given the needs of both teams. Not to mention that Lou seems to like going back to the well with teams he's made trades with before so there's that too. |

Petterson's a fine player, but his cap hit is a little scary.......even with the cap going up.
How about this trade: Islanders trade Nelson, Dobson and Engvall. Nucks trade Petterson, but retain $2MM per season to make the numbers work? . No draft picks are included. |

Good point.
I know Lou has always been very high on Dobson but the kid has hit a wall this year as far as progress in his growth imo. For me he actually has regressed this year which was disappointing. He started playing much better right before his injury.
Do you include Holmstrom as part of the deal being he’s progressed nicely and is young? |

Your trading Engvail. NO WAY ! That kills the deal!

I can't imagine VAN would be willing to retain $2M until 2032.
But if they could send Engvall along in the trade then that would effectively be, more or less, the same thing. |

I thought the same thing when I typed it. But, as much as I like Petterson, I see him as a player worth $9 - 10 MM in terms of his cap hit. $11-12 MM should be for guys scoring 40+ goals per season, or 100+ points per season. What if Petterson's problems this season are more than just his feud with JT Miller?

I mean he's had a 100pt+ season and hit 39 goals that year. The talent is there for sure. There's obviously some sort of serious issues in the locker room so I'm willing to bet a change of scenery and a much quieter market would do wonders for him.
And if they were able to move Engvall in the deal, that would be a savings of $3M/yr until 2030, so that's basically the same as salary retention up until the final two years of the deal. |

I guess I meant to imply scoring 40g or 100p on a consistent basis. I know he broke 100 one season and nearly scored 40 that same season.
If I were Lou, I would have a private conversation with Horvat and ask about the personalities of the two antagonists (Petterson and Miller)........try to get a sense whether the problems might lie with one or the other. That could be valuable information on which to base a decision. I would hate to commit megabucks to a player who has personal issues. On the other hand, the problem could be nothing more than Miller's jealousy over Petterson's significantly higher salary.

Considering DiPietro got hurt at an All Star game and Taveras got hurt in the Olympics that scenario has Islanders written all over it. |
