I sort of look at them as the 1st verging on the 2nd. I feel like they have squandered the opening of the window years, and definitely the first couple of open window years . . .so they probably have a couple more open window years before they are in the closing window years which last 2-4 years . . . if you look at the general rebuild models . . .

The Penguins were in contention from 2006 - 2021 - 16 years.

The Capitals were really 2007 - 2021 - or 15 years. I don't understand this year at all or how it's happening and I don't want to talk about it.

The Blackhawks were really only 2008 - 2016 - 9 years. The Hawks challenge seemed to really be that they had too many decent players and had to make a lot of hard decisions on who went and who stayed and it affected their longevity. By 2015 they'd won their third cup and were paying simply too much on the next contracts to Toews and Kane to maintain their competitive balance. Bad news for Leaf fans: it was the equivalent of having 2 $13m players which just made it too hard for them to stay competitive.

Tampa is probably 2013 - present but their window is on the closing side - they probably have a couple of years left where they will be considered a threat. So maybe you call that about a 14 year window.

Even the Bruins - who only won one cup - were basically 2007 - 2023 with a couple of lean years in there as well.

These are teams showing sustainable year-over-year success. The Avs struggled with consistency before 2017 and the Kings were a bit of a flash in the pan.

So a 12 year window is very, very loose and approximate obviously. It's shortened by bad contract decisions and widened by not making panic moves and perhaps accepting a couple of bad years in there here and there. But it does feel that surrounding the acquisition of a franchise player through the draft, that's about where you are.

I'd agree with this for sure.

One thing I think most of these teams did differently than the Leafs - didn't go to the HUGE contract with their 'star' players until after they had sustained, multi year playoff success. I didn't do the research so I stand to be corrected but that feels like the mistake the Leafs made and are paying for.

Ok one of the mistakes. lol

If I managed the Canucks and Petterson’s game was suffering because of a bully I’d fire Miller into sun just to get him out of there.

Petterson was shaping up to be one of the best players in the league, 102 points in his third season.

- shack67

Come on. Miller is being hard on him because of his crappy play not causing it. EP has had a couple injuries that appear to be hampering him. His wrist shot is not the same nor is his skating. Yet he signed a massive contract and isn’t living up to it. He also doesn’t seem to be putting in the work to turn it around. He came into camp out of shape and is more interested in video games than rehab. He didn’t get the nickname Pouty from out of the blue.

Agreed.

If the Leafs had kept Kadri (his previous contract, not his current) and re-signed Hyman, they would have been much better off than signing Tavares.

He would kill Nylander.

And he doesn't want to play in Canada anymore (don't blame him).

Rielly + Kampf ---> VAN
JT Miller + Timmins ---> CBJ
Jenner + Severson ---> TOR

Everybody kind of wins.

not really imo

If my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.

I don't recall you or anyone else in here saying the Leafs shouldn't go after and get JT when he was a UFA and we have no way to know what either player that left would become if they stayed here.

One was a guy who had shown he couldn't control his temper and would be suspended come playoff time and the other was nothing like the player he has been in Edmonton.

Fresh start with a fresh team can mean a totally different player.

Why not?

Each main player is waiving to go "home", each team is addressing an area of need, each team is acquiring salary they can fit under the cap and each team is still going to push for the playoffs / success.

Does Vancouver need more or something different? Fine. But the core pieces work. An extra pick, prospect or player is whatever.

And yet it was a mistake which we can all clearly see today. In the future, it would be nice if Leafs management could see it before having to learn it the hard way like the fans had to.

Dubas made some errors in judgement handing those big contracts out to player who hadnt earned it.
JT was a vet, star and an FA....so he got what he got as result. Neither AM or Marner should have been over $10per.

Meh not really.
We had them both and didnt win anything.
Had the pandemic not shut down the leagues and curb the cap, the leafs would have been in great position to build better teams.
But it is what it is.

Oh no, if you guys are sending Jewelsie down here, we need a sweetener on the deal. At least a 1st round pick and a grade A prospect.
- GalacticStone

Some Maple Syrup…? But no guarantee Jewelsie doesn’t drink it on the way down, or donates it to syrup girl in person.

Yes if we could all only see into the future.

This is your thing, you come here and whine about what the Leafs did or didn't do like you are some oracle and saw this coming. You aren't and you didn't and coming here every day and babbling about it is annoying and stupid.

It's like saying your a moron for not buying Apple stock when the first went public, I mean how could you not see how big they would be and be a millionaire by now? It would be nice if you could have seen it before it was coming and your family not having to live the life they do not being rich.

See how dumb that sounds?

Do just a few less reps to make your neck so thick and work on your stretching and you could probably get your legs wide enough to fit that train track!

And as an added bonus be a goalie on (insert NHL team with the worst goaltending at the moment here) this year.
