I’m not totally displeased with the big French D man. If you actually watch him away from the puck he was owning the ice in front of Ned. You don’t need a liability on every D pairing. |

If they do something substantial, Bunting.
If it's moving a rental, Gryz, though I could see them keeping him too. |

Yeah that is why I still feel eh about the deal after looking at Vancouver's cap situation. I at first thought that Vancouver didn't have a lot of cap space so we took both players on to make the cap workout. It does look as though we took on 2 cap dumps...This move still makes me agree with your previous statement of Dubas being over his head. The prospect and the 1st are the only 2 things with value. I feel like Pettersson alone had similar value. DOC probably had 5th round value. Then a 4 million cap dump is at least a 3rd/2nd. It probably would have been a better deal if they also took Graves.
I think the value of the Rangers pick currently is something he may have overvalued.
Edit:
At first I did like the trade. Until I thought about it more and more. Now that I slept on it I still keep coming back to why Heinen? Why another year of him.. He's not young. He just blocks someone from WBS as discussed earlier in this discussion. He really isn't even that good. Now we will have 6 million tied up into our overpaid 4th line. Lizotte is the only one I would keep. Desharnais was awful this season there is hope he can turn it around, but if he doesn't we have Graves and him scratched.
So a potential for 6 million scratched on the blueline and 6 million for our 4th line. 12 million cap space which we could have used for a 2nd line winger... - 123Kid
That's a spot where we disagree. Getting a first from a team that might not make the playoffs I thought was tremendous value. Adding a prospect that was basically a 2nd rounder and had a second round grade most places too. I think that's worth more than Pettersson and DOC.
So they took some cap hits. But they didn't maybe have players for those roles. They clearly needed a bottom RD and to add a crease clearer since St. Ivany didn't stick yet. They needed someone they could plug into the middle six that played the defensively responsible wing that DOC didn't fill. I believe only McGroarty is that type.
I do wish they didn't add the term though I think value it's worth. The return does make me question how hard they plan to compete next year. But those small salaries just add a smaller pile next to Jarry, Graves, and Hayes (though Hayes hasn't been terrible). |

Rangers might not make playoffs but pick is top 13 protected . You know if Rangers are missing the playoffs they will tank to make sure they miss by enough to be 13th or worse |

I think there is a good chance the Rangers pick, this year or next is a top 20 pick. I think a top 20 pick is worth more than the #25 and a 2nd rounder if you look from the standpoint of trading up.
This was as good as it's going to get for the Pens. And Heinen and Descharnais overpaid or anything. I'd rather not have contracts into next season but with the cap going up, 4th liners and bottom pair D are going to be getting +$3M in a lot of cases.

My bold Penguins prediction:
FSG is selling a stake in the team because they are over leveraged on the acquisition and thought they'd be able to squeeze more juice out of the Pens in a rebuild. But we are already seeing attendance drop.
Somewhere Burkle (who actually understands business) is sitting there with a hoard of cash, missing owning an NHL team and annoyed that FSG has done such a terrible job. Burkle (and maybe Lemieux) buy the minority stake in the Pens on the condition that they go all in on trying to win.
Pens go big game fishing and win one more cup before Sid retires. Maybe not that last part but we can hope.
We have $20M+ to find a 1LW, 1LD and 3C next season... Pay Marchand $9M, Matheson $6M and Duchene $7M. Keep our 1st rounders to kick off the retool while still competing. |

Meh. You can definitely just misd or barely make it and go out in the first round. Which no offense is what we are rooting for. |

I think that is partially my worry. That JT Miller helps give them a jolt and push, they bomb it this year. Then next year get aggressive in the offseason and have a deep pick next year. I am definitely rooting against the Rangers. Hope they get a 15th overall pick. Or bomb the next two years. |

I think you're overthinking all of this trade. You've already made up the roster for NEXT season in your head and this years trade deadline isn't even over yet. Let alone the off season and FA starting. Get through that first.
It's possible Heinen is just a body to put in the line up for right now. Often teams don't just play as many young kids as possible. They like to protect and insulate them. You don't want them to be exposed to the losing nature of a "tank" or "rebuild" for extended time.

I think FSG were primarily interested in the real estate around the arena. That has a big value proposition. The Penguins arent a typical FSG team to buy. I'd love to see the business case they put together.

No one should want this team to be competitive next season. Next year has the lottery pick we care about. A top 5 pick this year and the number 1 pick next year would be a best case scenario. |

Yeah you are definitely correct. I am hoping we do bring on some additional young talent. We do have tons of time left to see what else happens to this roster. |

For sure that was the plan, but US Prime borrowing rates have gone from 3.25% at acquisition to 7.5% now. That's a massive shift for an investment group heavily leveraging debt for acquisitions/projects. Add to that, Pens attendance is no longer a guaranteed sell out.
There is a reason they are already selling a minority stake after just 3 years. But yeah, I'd also love to see what their investment thesis was. [/img] |

Sad though that next year is likely Geno's last. Not that I believe a quick turn around was possible or that this is the best way to go. Just sad. |

I think the trade is a good sign. More assets/kicks at the can and some vets to plug in for the moment

I think its really interesting that McDavid is going to be a free agent next summer when the cap is going to jump up big. That would mean pretty much every team could be interested in signing him. Reminds me of when Durant left OKC, the new TV deal money had just hit the salary cap which enabled almost every team to be able to afford him.
McDavid would be nuts to sign a new deal now. Wait to see what's out there. I do worry about the financial health of some of the Canadian teams with this new salary cap, even some of the smaller US teams. I dont want a league of the haves and have nots like baseball. |

I want this team to be competitive next season. I want us to put together a team that can me make the playoffs and transition from Sid to some of the youth we will be adding.
I'd love to get McKenna, but no matter how hard we sell out, it would take some major lottery luck to get that pick. Teams will tank harder than we can.
Let's get Marchand and run him with Sid and Rust. Get someone who can bump Geno to 3C. That's more than enough to get us in the playoffs. |
