Meh.

With new cap numbers, $3.5 for 5 would be not be terrible.

well, 4M is an overpayment for sure, but with the cap significantly going up it won't be a complete and total disaster either...
- Pat1993

Wouldn't be the worst signing ever but you can't afford too many bad contracts if you want to win in that league.

I agree, the cap going up doesn't mean GMs can now make a bunch of mistakes, but there's a bit more wiggle room for sure.

so far I trust HuGo to make the right decision when it comes to contracts, they seem to know what they are doing.

Trades...we shall see, not impressed with Dach and Newhook so far.

Cap going up will mean the return of tons of very bad contracts for UFAs. Being up against the cap was protecting GMs from themselves these past few years.

for sure. but the Laine trade made sense (even if it doesn't work out in MTL), the Carrier one too, flipping Sean Monahan made sense, Jeff Petry, Mike Matheson, etc.

I wouldn't be too worried about trades either lol.

yeah, we might see a trend of really bad contracts being handed out, hopefully the management team in MTL will stick to the plan and won't fall for that kind of sh!t so that they properly continue the rebuild and assure a decent salary structure.

I think the Newhook trade was fine. Late first rounders/2nd rounders have more chances of not making it to the NHL than being a regular NHL player. For every Pastrnak, you have 20 Scherbak.

Newhook might not be a top 6 player, but he's definetely a NHL player and with his speed, can be an effective one.

Dach has been disappoiting this season, we might be at a crossroad with him and I wouldn't be shocked to see a trade involving him. I'm also fine with the idea of waiting to see what he does in his last contract year and then make a decision about his future.

I think the Newhook and Dach trades were still good trades. On paper they made sense, it's just that the players didn't deliver up to their predicted potential (so far).

yup, it comes down to the reality that all trades won't necessarily be homeruns, you just gotta try to avoid making really bad ones that would have a huge negative impact on the team both on the ice and financially moving forward.

Howard Berger was a Leafs blogger who hated everything about the Leafs...that was before they were good (drafted Matthews). Cloutier was the Oilers blogger....he was a real homer with all their first round draft picks that never panned out. Cloutier was known to challenge fans of other teams none stop.

Both were VERY entertaining

it was a pure poop show when they posted blogs, their own fanbase who go crazy, fans of others teams would pile on to make things worse.
