I like our odds for the Olympics. I was a bit worried we didn't ice enough snarl for this tourney, but cooler heads prevailed and this game wasn't the bloodbath I thought it was going to be. - gravyface
We really need a goalie or two to step up and become stars.....in the next year.
Also, maybe move on from Marchand and Doughty. Get a little younger |

There are some salty Muricanos talking like this game meant nothing... nice fake all-star cup. Funny how things change after a loss? - gravyface
Oh you know it meant something to them |

Politics aside, the better team won. Period. Team South Quebec is no joke, but McJesus is still lord. - GalacticStone
Hard to argue the teams weren’t equal.
USA had incredible chances in OT.
Funny thing is, Matthews had several chances to win it, and then missed his man on the winning goal.
If Marner was in his shoes (skates), this place would be bedlam today. |

Yeah, the biggest thing for me was how evenly matched these games were. Individually, on paper, you can give the nod to the US, but the actual game on the ice was incredibly tight, I can't remember ever seeing games like that before.
I mean we've all seen tight playoff series, but the speed and skill on display being parried by the speed and skill on D was insane to watch.
It was like a Batman vs. Superman brawl. |

Believe the last time the Leafs/Sabres went into OT, Matthews won it. Puck was barely on his stick before it was in the back of the net. I thought he was going to win it. He had identical opportunity and Binnington robbed him. Poor Auston. Great job by Binnington. He is a PTPer and Marner was electric the entire tourney. |

The speed was something else for sure, the game is so much faster since the last best on best (yes yes I know, this didnt have all the best players).
Umm Im not a comic book aficionado but Batman is just a rich guy with cool toys and some karate skills.
Superman is an alien that can shoot lasers from his eyes, stop bullets, Jet liners and stuff.....he would destroy batman.
Im not sure who would be an equivalent to superman.....any comic books peeps out here?

Why are you cheering for Canada? I’m pretty sure that most of the American players aren’t fans of Trump. - shack67
I'm not willing to give the Americans a pass on this.
In the current political climate, ie Trump's constant musings about annexation, I thought it was utterly classless of Bill Guerin to invite politics directly into this series with Trump's phone call. I lost respect for Guerin big time.
Noah Hanifin and JT Miller gushing about how "cool" the call was and how they want to "win for Trump".
Then Mike Sullivan is like, "we're just trying to win a hockey game".
Well, no.
You can't have it both ways. I would like to see our media press Matthews on this, actually. And Brady Tzcachuk. You're American captains on Canadian teams. What do you guys think about Trump's comments about annexation? The US team invited the politics in - now they should answer the questions. |

How to tell somebody didn't watch any of the games - gravyface
I watched the majority of the games and didn't find it that interesting. It was tight, good hockey for the most part and the final was exciting. But just didn't fully land for me.
Think it was A.) too small of a tourney, B.) Felt a little gimmicky and thrown together just to satisfy a fanbase they robbed for a decade and C.) painful everytime they claimed it was 'best on best' when probably 50% of the top 10 players in the world weren't even there.
Had fun watching the final but happy it's over and we can get back to leaf hockey. |

To be honest, I found the games themselves to be a little dry.
There's absolutely no doubt that the speed and skill were there.
Unfortunately, a lot of the skill was for defensive hockey and not making mistakes.
Perhaps I'm just an old man yelling at clouds, but the 1987 Canada Cup was wide open. It was much more exciting to watch. |

Bennington was clutch in OT, as he has been.
But hes not on the level of helly.....or doesn't give me the same confidence. We won, so its great and he was the better goalie in the period that it counted.
But our goaltenders arent on the same level they use to be or compared to other countries. |

You take away Matthews' questionable decision to try and take away the passing lane instead of just taking the man which led to the loss and look at his game overall - I've never really looked at his game from the perspective of the opposition before and he is a very scary player. He had the game on his stick a number of times yesterday and I think if he were healthier, he cashes in on a couple of those chances. Like when he was on the ice, shots were 14-4 in favour of the US and HD chances were 5-0. He was phenomenal and terrifying.

All 80s hockey was wide open. It's reflective of the times. The OT last night was actually waaay more loose than I thought it would be. Stanley Cup OT is often tighter checking than anything in the four nations tournament. |

Do you think your Sabres will be sellers at the deadline or maybe make a 1 for 1 hockey trade to change up the dynamic of the team a bit? |

I would rather they leave politics out of it - it's like religion. Unless someone brings it up, there's no point in talking about it.
Earlier in this tournament someone did ask Matthews about something similar and he sidestepped it, effectively saying that he didn't want to bring politics into it.

Ok, but unfortunately, Bill Guerin and USA hockey DID classlessly bring politics into it, and Matthews is the team captain.
They should be pressed on it. |

On the level of Helly?
Helly hasn't won anything - ever. He is a playoff choker, Binnington has a cup and now this win.
I'm glad the leafs never went aftwer Helly like some here wanted so badly. Same for Saros who got exposed and lit up in this tourney.
