If roughly 50% of North Americans are Republican/Conservative and 50% are Democrat/Liberal, why is it that 90% of the comments on here are pro dem/lib?
🤔 - mr.sir
Part of it is a lot of conservatives have to be in coalition with liberals currently, because they can't support Trump.
I'm anti-MAGA, but that doesn't mean I'm pro the other parties.

Is it safe to estimate that more than 50% of Canadians leaning left? - alex.TML
75+%. Canadian conservatives are "Progressive".
It's basically Liberals driving the speed limit. Same destination at a lower speed. |

Holy poop.
Hadn't finished my first cup of coffee yet, and I read this as "Matthews" not "Matthew."

So Maxime Bernier is Canadian version of Trump? He is not anywhere close, but still closer than anyone else. I never paid attention on Canadian politics until recent times and still learning. |

Well, it really depends in where you set the “centre” mark.
The current Canadian Conservative Party would by most objective evaluations still be left of the Democrats.
Most political observers would say the Liberal Party of Canada is centre-left. Conservatives are centre-right. NDP is left.
That puts the majority of Canadians left of centre, at least from how we define it.
But the dirty little secret is there’s a helluva lot less difference between the Liberals and Conservatives than both parties would have you believe. 90% of their policies are very similar.
Ignore the angry vitriol you read on the internet, and read party platforms at election time instead. |

Somewhat but there is no real Canadian Trump. Fundamentally, the US constitution is much better and much stronger so the countries are going to be different because of that. |

Exactly. There’s no way any party in Canada would advocate for the kind of healthcare system they have to our south. |

I am trying to listen to sources usually, I don't believe what anyone said blindly.
listening Pierre Poilievre and his is still left of center in my opinion.
Sure it also different from province to province, the Western Canada is more conservative I guess.

I suspect their founders found the way to make system balanced when some side takes too far. US system has ability for self healing, but some Western Counties can just fall from cliff. |

It is also hard to define left, center and right, these target are changing with time.
Let's say democrats of JFK time are diametrically opposite to current democrat party. |

And the picture is complicated by things like Ontario often having a Lib provincial government under a Con Parliament and vice versa. Even Alberta has had an NDP majority provincial government in recent memory and they're supposed to be exceptionally rigidly obedient to the blue lawn sign.

I almost feel like the Liberals have jumped the NDP to the left on alot of things..
Also saw a chart a little while ago that shows that the Obama era was actually closer to Trump's first term than it was to the current Dems..
The entire political landscape has slid left over the last 40 years |

It started to drift left at the end of 60s so it is somewhere close to 60 years most likely. |

I’m not sure how you arrive at this idea.
JFK was very pro civil rights.
He believed in promoting US influence throughout the world.
He worked to raise the minimum wage.
He used government funds to support businesses and stimulate the economy during a bad recession.
If you want to play this game, look at Nixon’s track record. Today, the current Republican Party would consider him worse than Kamala Harris.

America is split into thirds.
One third maga.
One third anti maga.
One third don't give a (frank) one way or another.
Of the one third that are anti maga, I'd guess about one third of that is far left, and two thirds moderates or anti Trump conservatives.
It's a myth that America has a numerous far left or far right.

They were against wars, "make love not wars", against government, against establishment and against big pharma. The current democrat party does not share the same values anymore.
Going to look at Nixon things, it is interesting. |

Well, wanting there to be regulation so that Thalidamide babies don't happen again is not the same as being against big pharma. The US hasn't ever had an administration that is hostile to pharmaceutical industry really until now, and that might just be because ol' Bobby Brainworm Kennedy Jr. prefers his local, mom-and-pop street level drug dealers.

You are confusing the far-left, anti-war movement with the mainstream Democrat Party of the time and JFK’s government.
The US involvement in Vietnam escalated under JFK.
Hell, the closest the world has ever been to nuclear war was under JFK.
