Can anybody come up with a logical explanation why they would acquire a high level, Cup winning, playoff performer at a pretty high price just to trade him again a couple months later?

Did the Hurricanes fall out of a playoff spot during the 4 Nations?

I don't see the Leafs or any other team being able to offer the Hurricanes more than what Rantanen is worth to them for a long playoff run, which has been their target for 5 years now. No pick or prospect or anything else can do more for the Hurricanes to reach their goals than what Rantanen currently can give them.

They also have at least 38 million in cap space so giving him a new contract, while costly, is still well within their range.
