Avs definitely could have signed him. If the 12/yr is correct, they would have had 14+ to work with for next year and easily fit him under. Apparently he was just hardballing in his meetings with them, so they decided to move on from it quickly. One of the reasons he was so shocked, he thought they would hash it out.

Same & Russians are always an incomplete player. Floaters mostly besides the odd one get lucky on. Only Russian D seem to get it. In goal they excel.
