Easy solution is to sign Knies first - winsix
If you're the leafs what is your offer? 8 x 8?
If you're Knies would you take a shorter deal knowing the cap is going up? 6million x 4 years?

Atlantic analysis : (pass/fail)
.....
Prediction : Leafs, Cats, and Bolts finish as the Top-3. The exact order remains to be seen. It's totally up for grabs and any one of them could win the division. - GalacticStone
Bold prediction there Cotton.
You typed all that poop out to only then hit us all with a "ah duh" prediction.
Come on GS, something more like this...especially after typing a small novel....
Prediction: Leafs win the division and then go on to destroy every team they face in the playoffs, Carlo and Laughton were the perfect additions, Matthews and Marner found their playoff balls and the whole team gels together perfectly to win their first Stanley Cup in 57 years.

Atlantic analysis : (pass/fail)
Leafs (PASS) - addressed two priority needs at 3C and D. Moves the needle and makes the team better, but not dramatically so. Late first picks are overrated and the players moved out were not valuable or irreplaceable. IMO, the price was worth it, especially considering the term and retention. All the pieces are in place for a deep run with no excuses. If there is major disappointment again, I would make heads roll from the front office on down.
Lightning (PASS) - addressed a major need in bottom six depth. They are not as top heavy now and will be a harder out. Bjorkstrand is a low key solid addition and expect his fantasy value to jump. He regularly put up 20+ goals on poop teams and has never been surrounded with the kind of talent he is now. Vasi is the key though. If he steals a series or two, they are a major threat. If not, they will wash out in the first round again.
Panthers (PASS) - they said OEL was washed before he went to Florida. They say the same thing about Jones. He is not washed and will flourish. Like Bjorkstrand, he has spent the majority of his career playing for poop teams. Marchand is over the hill and gimpy. I don't think he moves the needle much. Other players in the room have a more recent champion pedigree than Marchand does. I think Jones will have a much bigger impact than Marchand. Of course, he'll make a liar out of me now and win the Conn Smythe.
Bruins (FAIL) - their deadline moves were actually smart and they received some good assets in return. But, they get a fail because the franchise is in a tail spin and going down in flames. Poor Pasta and McAvoy are the last men standing amongst a squad of rookies, scrubs, and has-beens. It's hard not to dance on their grave after so many false alarms, but it feels real this time, so dance away like nobody is watching. (frank) them.
Ottawa (PASS) - not because their deadline was great, which it wasn't. It also wasn't bad either. Overall they seem to be on an upward trajectory, which is a wet dream for Spatso, but I just can't bring myself to care about them. Unless Ulmark has a Vezina season, I don't see them being contenders any time soon.
Montreal (NO GRADE) - MSL will whip this team into shape eventually if his leash is long enough and he is given the budget and players to work with. Like Ottawa, I just can't bring myself to care about them yet, because they are not close to contending.
Detroit (FAIL) - The Yzerplan is overrated. Great player, great GM in Tampa, but nobody's buying what he's selling any more. His calls go to voice mail now. He gets more credit than he's due for Tampa's success. Tampa already had Stamkos and Hedman when he walked in the door. He's had enough time to work his magic in Detroit and the results are slow to materialize. Overall they're trending upwards, just very very very slowly.
Barfalo (FAIL) - still a tire fire and will remain a tire fire for the foreseeable future. I'll start caring about them when they do something worth caring about.

Hige pass for the sens, i hate to say it but i think they did some sneaky good moves.
Id say a pass to the bruins as well. They realized it was time to unload and they did. Still have pasta, mcavoy and a good goalie locked it, could be a quick rebuild |

Id do 5 x 6m for knies. Gives the leafs and affordable cap hit to really see what this guy is.

I'm ticked off Leafs paid a lot for Carlo compared to Marchand. Yes I know RHD and aged 28 with contract.
Marchand got 50% retention and only got a conditional 2nd! Considering prices in general this deadline it feels like a steal for the panthers, within the same division.

I find the leafs overpay for everything.
As for Marchand he may have said he would only go to certain trams. |

“ The Panthers gave up a second-round draft pick for Marchand that could become a first-rounder if Florida wins two rounds in the playoffs and the veteran plays in 50% of their postseason games.” |

Couple of variables you're missing.
1. He has a significant injury.
2. The conditional 2nd is a conditional 1st.
3. He had a lot of control and listening to EF he basically was able to direct himself to Florida.
It was a lot like the Hall trade a few years back. Count this one as payback to the Bruins. |

Does the informal yet obvious NHL "no state tax" formula mean that Rantanen signing for 12M equates to about $13.5M for Marner?
Anything under $13 is probably a "discount" at this point ...as crazy as that sounds. |

Knies shaping up to be a top five LW in the NHL at age 22. Leafs have been sorely missing a great LW for some time. Leafs would do this, I'm not sure Knies would. Leafs should do what they can to sign him before he can receive offer sheets. If the Canes could pay $6.1M in cap crunch 2021 for poopbag Kotkaniemi, just think of what they would offer Knies. They have the first rounders to not give a (frank).

It's awesome isn't it! It will be a lovely run-in. I'm hoping to get through PSG in the UCL, too. I want our boys to have a crack at Real Madrid in rnd. 2. 👍 |

I'd be happy with anything around $13M as long as he's able to produce in the playoffs, especially in games 5-7. |

There's a calculator for that.
https://puckpedia.com/tax-calculator
Rantanen at 12 AAV takes home 2 million more in Dallas than Toronto.
Marner probably needs at least 13 in Toronto so his take home pay is where he wants it to be.
Unlike Matthews and Tavares, he can't claim he lives in a lower / no tax state when he gets his signing bonus which is the #1 tactic to avoid the Canadian taxes.

Aghree, although that Marchand contract becomes a first if he plays enough, and Florida goes a couple rounds If he doesn't play that much, then he likely was injured, so wasn't worth much. |
