Agree….go all in on a rebuild

What’s the % of any pick making the nhl? % of those players being an impact player?

Sure we have lots of picks now but still lots of big positions to fill.

It’s still a long road for dubss

Dubas said he wants to give Sid and the crew 1-2 more kicks at a Cup. That means it has to start next season. Not trading Rackell also signals that. They like Gryz and I expect they'll get an extension done before FA... We have no one else to play LD.

I've been hoping we are going to make a run at it next season, so to me this was close to a perfect deadline. Dubas got really good value for guys we don't need next year.

We need with everything we have in place, we need 1LW, 2LW, 3LW & 1LD, assuming we resign Gryz. We do have the cap space to do this. The wildcard being if we get a 1st rounder who can contribute in year 1. Hagens or Misa could very possibly fit on the 3rd line next year, less likely but possibly Martone.

Ottawa proved what we know and it's that they are a cheapskate franchise. Norris for Cousins was purely done on the basis of Norris costing a bunch more in real cash the next several years.

I mention this because it makes sense that they could wait until after Karlssons bonus to be paid before trading for him in the off-season... Pure speculation.

I think Dubas thinks he can build a contender with the assets amassed and sees Rackell as part of that. Per Tojo’s point, why wasn’t Peterssen was part of that? I have no idea but it does feel like Dubas has a plan right now.

He really liked the prospect we got and a potential top 20 pick this year could contribute quickly if he hits on it. Also, if he hadn't done that trade, he may have been more inclined to trade Rack?

Also, maybe it's because we are going to go big game fishing on an LD and get Powers.

At this point, the only thing that makes sense is he didn't want to completely gut the team in deference to the core. Keeps Sid on track to get the PPG record. Gryz has been good on the PP and Rak has been our best goal scorer. Can't think of any other reason a rebuilding team wouldn't take a top prospect and a 1st for a 30+ player having a career year.

Dubas also confirmed EK was never discussed, but he made a comment about how valuable EK is in the league. He's going to try to move him in the summer for sure.

I did forget that Peterssen potentially got us a second 1st in this year’s draft. That could be a pretty big deal in a trade this offseason

Who's the goalie?

That's a pretty big shopping list for 25-26M. Also need a bottom pair RHD (Timmons rfa), need a bit for a new contract for Tomasino. Likely need to replace EK. They have A LOT of needs. And then have to hope regression from age or Rackell's shooting percentage doesn't hit too hard....

I fully believe Dubas plans to trade EK and Grz has proven he can replace some of that production. You shed that salary and you can grab someone like Ekblad in free agency as well as literally any other free agent…Marner?

Not to mention the plethora of picks that could net a decent player in return. I still think the “lottery” determines Dubas’ plan for 25-26. Top 3 pick and NYR 1st speeds up this “retool”.

Yeah, in some ways we almost have too many draft picks now. I'd love to trade some volume for quality. Can we use some of our 3rds to move up from a late 2nd to early 2nd this year? Can we use some of our 2nds to move up from the Rangers pick to the top 10?

I'm not saying it's easy, but:
Marchand 3x$8M. Overpay to get
Benn 2x$7M. Overpay to get.
Hagens $1M need some luck
Chuchryn 7x$8M or a trade for Powers or Gavrikov.

That's a much harder team to play against.

First off, don't want you to feel I'm picking on you specifically, I just see a lot of holes in the quick turn around idea and you happen to be the guy posting specifics tonight.

Still haven't addressed goalie. It's a big mess with Jarry and Ned under contract, Blomqvist not looking ready, and Murashov not getting the AHL time he needs. Do you add someone else with the prospects on the way who could give you cheap goal tending in a year? If not though, almost zero hope of playoffs.

Then you have to convince top UFAs to come here when everyone is getting after cap room. Today even Luke Schenn didn't want to come here.

I think we should all write letters to Sid telling him his legacy is good in Pittsburgh. Go play hockey.

Apparently we extended Shea. 1 year, 900k. Solid enough depth guy.
- Tojo.

Rather have Like Schenn for 2.1 or whatever. You get what you pay for. 900k doesn’t buy you good solid tough D.

I agree with what you're saying but those two goalies were pretty good last season for stretches that they just haven't been at all this season. Jarry had good stretches before the end of season when Ned took over. Goalie position is so fickle. I wouldn't be surprised at all if one, or both, of them have better seasons, next season. Also wouldn't be surprised if they're absolute sh!t again hahah

Last year the goaltending was usually average to good enough to win...but the PP really stunk. So many games losing by a goal with the PP going 0/4 or more. This season is flip mode of those two things, great PP but absolutely putrid net-minding.

We really are not that far off from a top 3 pick… if buff and Seattle play .500 for a stretch, we are looking at a solid top 5 pick. This is the re goal… nothing gets us better draft capitol than losing. Let’s embrace the suck for a month and take a (frank)in swing in June.

If you’re going to embrace the suck 2 things need to happen. Geno, Sid, Ricky Rak need to be on a line together. Gotta at least play (frank)ing tough. I only watched the highlights of last nights game because I go to bed early but for (frank) sakes, walking right down Main Street to the net. Get Sid points and run out of position to play a violent style of hockey. Then you can embrace the suck.

I think it’s also important to note that we didn’t retain any salary yesterday… means we will have a couple spots open after Matheson off the books

I know this is difficult to do, but I think if we fix our Defense with a few solid defenders (maybe even via the draft). I could see our goaltending improving significantly next season. Schenn wanted to play for a cup this season so there was nothing we can do.

I think Marner and others would want to come here. I believe Dubas is good at selling free agents to sign with us. I do think in Marner's case he loves Sid and grew up idolizing him. I think it is possible to bring him here especially since he had a great relationship with Dubas as well.

The way it is trending we may move up quite a few picks with more losses this season (We also do have the pick surplus to trade up). Maybe we grab Schaefer, Misa, or Hagens and another solid talent during the draft. Maybe someone falls in the draft and we get them with the Rangers pick (maybe a trade up with this pick as well or trade this pick to a team for a solid young talent).

edit: At the very least it would put us in a lot better of a spot compared to this season.

The more I look into it. The more I kinda want to take a chance on Cameron Schmidt with our Rangers draft pick. Kid is probably the fastest skater in the draft and he definitely seems like he can make things happen with the puck. He definitely makes defenders sweat with his speed.

Edit:

Or Jack Murtagh he seems like he loves working in the dirty areas.

I thought there would be a big turnover this season, at least that's what I was hoping for. Keeping Grz and Rakell makes me think we're keeping Karlsson also. And Sullivan.

All I can say is we better strike it rich in the free agent market.

Lol at this stat from Pensburgh

The Pens have 18 picks in the top 100 in the next 3 drafts

They have made 19 picks in the top 100 over the past 11 years total

Vegas is a good team, but man the Pens sucked last night. Zero effort. Almost unwatchable. Yes... losing is winning now.

Yes. It seems like a toss up after the 10th pick. Honestly I would love us to land Misa and trade up for Anton Frondell or I wouldn't mind McQueen if we traded up with the Rangers pick. Just wanted to add some different names to the discussion.
