We have acquired forward Sam O’Reilly from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Isaac Howard.
In case nobody caught this late last night. Oilers picked up Isaac Howard from Tampa in exchange for a pretty solid prospect. If this was the offer they accepted, that likely means that we would have had to flip someone like Danny Nelson. Not implying that was ever on the table, just that the price probably would've been along those lines. |

Oilers need more forwards? Forwards were not the issue. |

Obviously as a Hoby Baker winner he’s got talent but I think he wanted an ELC and the isles already have a logjam at forward. I don’t see how they would have been able to sign him unless someone was moved. |

Yeah after all the moves it seemed unlikely there would be a spot for him without moving anyone out. Not upset, just figured it was relevant news since he was discussed so much here. |

Islanders should be in good shape with forward prospects. Oilers need defense and a goalie.

It was a little curious of a move for them, but he'll cost them virtually nothing so if he does turn out to be a good player then it was a great move, regardless of needs at other positions. It shouldn't prevent them from adding elsewhere. |

Yeah I can’t complain whatsoever after the draft and the additions. For whatever the reason it appears Darche has more of an ability to sign and or lure UFAs here. That will be huge in two years when the isles prospects start sprinkling in. I feel like July ‘27 is when Darche will throw money at an elite player. |

I just did not figure on the Oilers being the team. Tampa has to be happy trading him West.

Whatever the reason, Darche didn’t overpay for anyone, and didn’t give term to any UFAs.
Ironically if Lou were GM Dobson woulda been resigned for 11x8. Conversely Darche knew he was getting a better Dman with Schaefer and parlayed Dobson for 2 blue chips who play his style. Perfectly played by Darche |

Team like the Islanders have to make smart moves. Draft well and make smart trades and signings.

Daniil Prokhorov, @NYIslanders prospect:
— I had the best talk with Islanders. Like I knew them for 20 years. @NYRangers
wanted to choose me at the 43th number. But I said that they won't succeed, because @NYIslanders will choose me at the 42nd.

Haven't really seen it mentioned here but Eklund's blog on the main page reminded me:
Apparently according to Frank Seravalli on some radio hit yesterday, who is as legit as it gets, there has been some sort of trade discussion surrounding Ilya Sorokin. Not to imply he's getting moved or anything, but it's very interesting. Could have been as simple as Edmonton (or someone else) inquiring about his availability and/or price tag. Or maybe Darche wants to capitalize on his value now at age 29 since the Isles don't figure to be truly competitive for a little while anyway.
Not sure how to feel, but it might be an interesting storyline to follow. I don't see a path to trading him to Edmonton. They don't have any room for his cap hit and anybody who makes enough money to clear the necessary room to do it they either a) won't trade or b) can't trade because of full NTC
Frank Seravalli: Re Ilya Sorokin: Sources indicated that there might have been some sort of draft day deal with Utah and the #4 pick as part of a James Hagens deal that the Islanders were trying to work; I could never get to the bottom of that - Kevin Karius Show |

The other week, listening to all the hockey talk on my drive back from Florida, I couldn't help but think of Sorokin every time the conversation came up about how desperately Edmonton needs to upgrade goaltending and how few opportunities there were to do that.
But I kept coming back to where you're at...they can't take on the cap hit, and anything done to ease that hit for them...Isles retaining some salary or taking back a sizable contract in return (if that's even possible)...only increases the quality of the package Edmonton would need to put together to a point where they'd be either unwilling or unable to pay it.

I'm sure the size of the return the Isles would need to get if they retained wouldn't scare Edmonton off, but the Isles are most definitely not retaining salary for the next 7 years. You only get three salary retention transactions on your books in any given season and they'd be using 1/3 of those slots on Sorokin for the next 7 years. That one isn't happening.
But yea, I don't see any path to Edmonton making space for them unless Darnell Nurse decides to waive and, in that scenario, what the hell would the Islanders even want Darnell Nurse for. Edmonton would have to include like three first round picks, Matthew Savoie, and god knows what else for me to take that deal for the next 5 years |

In my head, the return went something like Skinner, which still gives the Isles a capable starting goaltender, albeit not of Sorokin's caliber; a roster player with a sizable contract, which allows the Oilers to make the numbers work...but one who isn't a complete black hole for the Isles either; and then basically a Christmas shopping spree style raid of Edmonton's picks and prospects that constitutes the real return.
I don't know much about Edmonton's prospect pool to know who would be worthwhile.
As for the roster player...I'm not sure you could pay enough to convince anyone to take Nurse and his contract. Maybe something like Ekholm and Skinner gets the numbers close and both of those players are only signed through this year, I think. I'm sure there's 60 different reasons why that couldn't work. |

Yeah, trading Sorokin would only make sense if the Isles were committed to some sort of 5-year plan to tear the team apart and rebuild from scratch. Goalies can play at an elite level into their mid-30s, and I got the impression from Darche's comments a while back that he was not planning on a 5-year plan.

Now don’t ever say never because Gretzky was traded so…..
But there is a slim chance SOrOkin will get moved. |

There is a little more worry with Sorokin's size and the back surgery. Still cannot see him moved yet, but not impossible it happens.
