Do any of you seriously think the Isles will make it into the playoffs?

It’s possible.

This team has a fought a noble fight. It is just not in the cards. Last night was the opportunity for this team to prove the Basement/ Internet GMs wrong.

Unfortunately for the fans, they did not. With eleven games left, the light on this seasoning is slowly dimming.

This team hasn’t been good for going on four years. To me it’s funny to watch the horror online that they may not make the playoffs. Does anyone think this team is capable of doing anything if they did? I get being a fan but the lack of objectivity(not saying you btw) is pretty funny.

Worst thing this team could do is make the playoffs. It’ll just give this old geezer more fuel to quadruple down on this incredibly stale lineup. There’s probably no stopping that(see Palmieri, Kyle) unfortunately but I don’t want to give this old (frank) anymore ammo. I mean Pulock and Pelech haven’t been good for three years and it’s like everyone is just coming to this realization last night. 😆

They've been out of it for two months. Anyone that understands math and statistics knows that. The stupid three point games make it difficult to gain in the standings. Plus the NHL likes to backload divisional games. While that seems exciting it guaranties that rivals in the standings get 2 points (and possibly a loser point).

I get it. My point is there is a complete unawareness of what this team is. Even if the stars aligned and they did make it what is anyone expecting? It’s like Islander fans enjoy feeling embarrassed. This team sucked with Barzal and Nelson. Without them it’s a miracle(a rather bad one imo) that they are even in the playoff conversation. That doesn’t change what they were with them. That’s a not very good team.

These same fans are so accustomed to sucking they thought Anthony Duclair was going to be a difference maker a few months ago. 😆

What happened to Pulock and Pelech? For a season or two they looked liked a legit 1B top pair.

They both really regressed after the two ECF runs. Pelech was really talked up during those runs.

Country club. That’s what happened. These guys started sucking before age was even a factor. There’s zero accountability for the players from a management team that supposedly demands it. A lack of real competition within the lineup from our management quadrupling down on the same, stale, lineup.

Zero legit prospects challenging for ice time. There are multiple reasons.

I think you bring up a great point about lack of prospects challenging for ice time. Hopefully that changes in the next few years. I always thought it was important to have a good farm to feed into the big club, but bport has been really bad for a LONG time. Wayyy before Lou even came in. I don’t believe the islanders farm team has won a Calder cup in their history.

I remember in the 90s my friends dad told us the isles had an all star coming up from the farm named Ziggy Palffy. When’s the last time that happened?

Bridgeport is an area where I would love to see the team invest some money, and I'm not counting whatever they dumped into the arena. They need to figure out a way to turn that dogpoop AHL franchise into somewhere we can actually teach players how to win. Part of it is the lack of talent coming through the pipeline but, like you said, they've been terrible for a very long time.

Regarding the last part, in fairness...Nelson/Lee/Pelech/Pulock/Cizikas/Martin all spent time in Bridgeport. Not stars, but all very solid-or-better NHL careers

I haven't been following it closely, but it sounds like Friedman's wording was off and he was fired. But then I saw some talk that it's possible Torts just hit a wall with a rebuilding team and effectively asked them to fire him. I have no idea, but yeah...the timing is very odd given how little of the season is left.

All the players you mentioned who spent time in bport are fan favorite’s. But none are true NHL stars. I’m hoping that the isles will have that coming up with some of the prospects who appear to be blue chip. As you said, they should invest in the farm team and try and turn things around. A winning bport team is only good for the islanders. It also allows for prospects to really develop, and not get thrown into the fire like many have hindering their success.

I mean they're not superstars, but Nelson and Lee have been very valuable NHL'ers. Nelson was an All-Star, Lee had a 40 goal season. Not trying to present them as stars, because they're not, but Nelson was a late 1st and Lee was a 6th round pick. A lot of stars aren't coming out of the AHL anymore, producing surefire NHL top-6/top-4 (D) players is a win for your AHL franchise.

But the Islanders haven't really been able to develop anything besides 4th line/bottom pair guys since probably the Lee/Nelson/Pelech/etc... years. George is promising though, so that's good news. Holmstrom seems to be turning into a reliable top-9 player too, with the potential to be a top-6 guy long-term.

Perhaps there’s a correlation between only being able to develop 4th line bottom pair guys, because the coaching and developement personnel are mostly 4th line bottom pair guys (in bport).

Only real way to invest in the farm team is to draft decent to high end players and develop them properly. They’ve done neither since Lou has been here. Yeah they sucked before Lou got here but they had periods of decentness whereas they are a complete abortion now. Get rid of the old guard of scouting and player development, start drafting, start developing your prospects differently. It’s not working. Another area there’s no accountability.

The entire staff involved with player development needs to be eradicated.
