True, but then you could have a lot of teams tanking toward the end of the season, and that's a very bad look for the League. Maybe not in a weak draft year, but could you imagine how many teams would have tanked for McDavid? - JohnScammo

Numbers never lie!!
Also from Chat GPT :
The Edmonton Oilers’ sequence of winning the first overall pick four times in six years, given their respective odds each year, was an extraordinarily improbable event, with a likelihood of about 0.03%. - kindlyrick

We are 24 hours until the last game of the season. I remember saying in every November I will wait to judge this team. It did not matter late October or late April. The outcome was unacceptable.
What are the odds that Roy is fired in the next 72 hours or steps down? I have a feeling that he will be the first piece to fall. |

Funny story, thanks. I did not remember that. I could be wrong, but I think it was sometime after that season that the NHL made the odds even worse for tanking. In other words, finishing last in the NHL meant that you were even less likely to draft first overall than in previous years.
I remember back in 2009, the Islanders were vying for last place. In the final game of the season, the Islanders were involved in a shoot-out. They were in danger of blowing their chances for the first overall pick. But all they had to do was not make their 3rd and final shot in the shoot-out. So Scott Gordon passed over some guys who might have scored and selected Brendan Witt to take the 3rd shot. Needless to say, Witt failed to score, the Isles finished in dead last, won the lottery, and selected Tavares. |

It's the SO and the Islanders. Nobody was scoring that goal.

The Frans might have. But I can't remember whether he had already taken his shot. |

Brendan Witt was a fine defensive defenseman for his era, but he was not known for his offensive ability. In fact, getting hit by the truck probably didn't hurt his offensive game at all. |

Frans would be the one player to score. Is there any such thing as a SO coach? If so, Frans needs to be hired.
 - ses111
The Isles were pretty bad back in those years, but they had one of the best, if not the best, shoot-out specialists in the NHL. The Frans was money with his deadly back-hand move...

Was that your guy, Neil Smith, who signed him? Decent signing, as Witt was pretty good his first 2 or 3 years on the Island. Eventually, they had to buy him out, but that was far down the road...

Yeah maybe I’m trying to be optimistic, but really at his age, with the last few years of regression, how can anyone with a clear head think this should continue. When the feelings subside over the facts, the facts are that he’s 82 years old. If I have my choice of a pilot or a brain surgeon, it ain’t gonna be an 82 year old. |

My memory is shot but I vaguely remember him thinking he was forced out of the league by someone. |
