Have they confirmed it? They've said he's free to pursue any job he wants with any other club. That doesn't sound to me like they're desperate to keep him around as an advisor. Staple keeps tucking in the ambiguous possibility of Lou sticking around in some capacity at the end of his reports. I don't think it's the team saying that.

You said “When he finally included sources from the actual team, they've denied it.” I’m asking who denied that report?

If Staple is saying something I’m gonna say he’s not making it up. If it was all made up, they’d ice him out like Snow did to Botta. They don’t have to confirm anything, but if he’s reporting it, it’s not made up.

Whoa...Staple said Lou was staying on to advise the GM...that's what started this entire firestorm in the first place. He cited "league sources," but included nothing from the actual team, and he got everyone talking about this major story that he broke. Days later, he finally included a team source, which, yes, denied the story. He then pivoted to, "Oh, maybe he's staying to advise Malkin," which is now just attributed to "the perception from outside."

I'm sure he's not "making it up." Someone probably said something to him. I'm saying it's sloppy reporting, and the story shouldn't have seen the light of day without first getting a comment from the team he's writing about. Now he's sleuthing to get the real story on his own bad reporting.

I honestly don’t believe this has anything to do with respect for Lou or his HOF career. When they released publicly that he wouldn’t be renewed they never mentioned, “but” he will stay on as advisor to ownership. I think the undertaking of the president and GM job is massive. They need to re do everything and they don’t have anyone, or at least the first choice or choices turned them down. I think that’s the Lou linger…..it’s from having no one else around entering a draft with the first overall.

It’s Staple BS pure and simple.
Botta is another one spewing BS.

I hear Lou is going to come on as advisor to Isles hockey buzz and will be running this blog going forward. Well actually I didn't really hear this, I am just insinuating this. The guy is 82 yrs old and can't seem to walk away from hockey, so this should be a good role for him. A true internet gm.

I took a peak into the Leafs board. They're not melting down nearly as hard as I thought they would be. They'll probably be in full panic mode on Friday. Man I hope the Cats close it out on Friday.

The leafs don’t have the dawg in them. They aren’t on the level of Florida. Marner and Matthew’s are jokes.

Maybe not, but the Leaf fans normally start planning the Stanley Cup parade every July.

According to The Athletic’s Arthur Staple, Brendan Shanahan could be a name to look out for regarding the New York Islanders’ President of Hockey Operations and General Manager vacancies. Shanahan has served as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ President since the 2014-15 season, and his contract expires on June 30th this summer. Should Toronto fail to reach the Stanley Cup Final or Eastern Conference Final, Staple believes the Islanders could encourage Shanahan to make a lateral move to the East Coast, and hire Toronto’s special assistant to the General Manager, Shane Doan, as their next General Manager.

Staple is all over the map with his information. It just points to no one really knows what is going on. It amazes me how every other team in the league can conduct seamlessly and the isles continually screw the pooche.

Staple is speculating. I don’t see anything wrong with it. He’s throwing out possible scenarios and options. That’s kind of part of his job. Also, I’d like to have a POH and GM in place yesterday but the team is doing their due diligence. They haven’t screwed the pooch until they actually (frank) it up. They haven’t done anything yet.

If anyone has watched Mitch marner the last 7 years and allowed him to continue his lazy play, we don’t want them. That Shanaplan is underwhelming to say the least

Im not a fan of making Shanahan the POHO but I think blaming him for Mitch Marner’s playoff performance is a stretch.

It’s 7 years of avoiding contact in the playoffs. 7 years of not playing sound D and losing your man (multiple times last night). When they fired Dubas and Keefe there was speculation he would be traded. They gave him a shot under Berube and it’s the same result. The guy hasn’t been a winner for 9-10 years and yet they continue with the same core. Marner is just one example of the core 4 who have continuously underperformed and yet they continue with the same flawed group. For me it’s a hard no on Shanahan.

They got pushed around last night and looked completely outmatched physically. That’s what you get with the core 4 and they continue with the same group year after year. If the Leafs lose, Shanahan won’t be renewed and Marner is outta there. Why does it take failure to remove the cancer? I don’t want that for the isles. We’ve seen enough Josh Bailey’s to last a lifetime.

I've never understood the infatuation with Dubas or Shanahan (or Keefe, for that matter, to a lesser extent). The Leafs have what should be a murderer's row of talent up front and have consistently failed when it matters. Until Dubas was gone, they virtually ignored bolstering the blue line and goaltending positions because they assumed they could produce in the playoffs the way they do in the regular season.
