John, I think the issue is the Leafs have not won a Cup for ages long before Shanny. The other issue is Shanny did not have the GM title so how much control did he have on the roster? I have no idea on Shanny's exact role. These are unanswered questions that make it tougher to get a true read on Shanny. The Islanders had one person running the entire show so it's easy to judge the performance. As Islander fans, we are used to one person running the show so hiring two people would be something new. I'm not saying Shanny is a slam dunk hire. I think the Leafs have a lot going on that makes that job that much tougher. I'm a fan of one president and one GM, but both better be on the same page and roles need to be 100% defined.

Regarding the Leafs owners, they strike me having that Jerry Jones Dallas Cowboy vibe where other things get in the way of winning.

Shanny is President of Hockey Operations. That means the buck stops with him. He is responsible for selecting the GM. The GM reports to him. That means he gets to dictate the roles of the two positions and how much say over the roster they each have. Presumably, the PoHO delegates most of this to the GM, but ultimately the PoHO is the guy in charge.

I'm frankly not sure why there's interest in this guy. I would think you'd want to look toward teams that have had playoff success, rather than teams that can't quite figure things out.

Thanks John! The separate roles is a new world for Islander fans. I'm thinking Collins is tight with Shanny. I'm fine with another president, but the pickings seem to be slim, and Collins may want a name.

The results speak for themselves. During Shanahan's tenure, how many playoff round wins do the Leafs have? Two??? The team was poorly constructed. Lots of big names, but short on results.

They remind me a little of the Ranger teams in the 1970s. I remember the shock when the upstart Islanders beat them in the 1975 playoffs. Torrey had simply constructed a much better team.

I don't understand the concern expressed on this board about the Leafs' owners meddling. Is that based on anything? I don't think that's the norm in the NHL, even if Wang used to meddle.

But that is the on the GM not the President.

Again, this is the role of the GM and not the President.

I am sure all Owners meddle with some degree. I think what the other on here were alluding to is the pressure cooker of being in Toronto. The probable oversite and involvement are probably much higher there than it would be here. Leading to more freedom and maybe a different outcome.
The other aspect here is Collins past relationship with Shanahan. If they had a good working relationship, it could be a positive outcome. I think Shanahan is well respected in league.

JS’s point is the POHO is the one who is directly responsible for hiring(sometimes) and firing anyone in management. I get it but also get your point. We don’t know the specifics with Shanahan. I don’t fault him for a lot of that went on with the Leafs. Though I do agree with JS I want nothing to do with him none the less. I want the best possible option with a track record of success. Either while working under someone during a successful tenure or actual sole success.

With all of this said I can see the Islanders going with Shanahan. It makes too much sense. I hope it’s Bergevin(in an poho role)and Darche but I can see them taking on shanahan. I hope that isn’t the case.

The reporting of Bergevin and Darche having second interviews is pretty clear those are the two selections for President and GM imo. The Shanahan idea was just fishing if you ask me. 2nd round of interviews with 2 guys who fit the mold of what they’re looking for is reason enough to assume those are the guys.

Yeah more than likely. Shanahan probably not being resigned and the Islanders not having a poho. EJ Radek was speculating that there may be a match there. I believe that’s all there was to it. Doesn’t mean it’s not happening even though I hope it doesn’t.

Yeah yesterday staple said Shanny wasn’t on the list….so who knows. I just read they wanna have their people in place before the combine June 1st to get a strategy in place leading up to the draft. Hopefully Eric Cairns and a few other alumni hires are at the U-Haul buying boxes and tape!!

Im with you. I hope they clean house and start fresh. It’s not a guarantee for success but it’s time for change. I’m willing to take that chance rather than doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

Bergevin as president and Darche as GM can work. Just need to have both roles clearly defined.

Rosner seems to think that both are interviewing for the GM role

This is what it seems like. I'd rather have Darche as GM then. This Shanny story is going to hang around a while.

Staple did say yesterday that, as of that point in time, Shanahan was "not on the list". Could just be because they are going to let Toronto get through the post-loss process of clean out media day and all that stuff. Who knows, don't like him though.

if it's true Shanny stopped Dubas from breaking up the Core 4, I do not want him either. We are not hearing anything on Brisson lately. I thought the last was he wanted to stay in LA.

Doesn't sound like that's really even a question, that was pretty much the widely accepted opinion out there after Dubas was let go...that he didn't have a ton of autonomy as GM there and Shanahan was really the one running the show.

Shanny sounding worse and worse. What would he do with a young GM like Darche?

That would be my fear. Not going to lose it over something that hasn't even been reported to be an option yet, but I sincerely hope they don't hire him. It does sound like Shanahan's contract is up at the end of the season and there's a good chance they don't renew it though.

Not sure what the dynamic would be between him and Bergevin either if they don't go with Darche.

I do not want a micromanaging president. We do not need shadow GM's or shadow coaches. I'd rather just hire a GM that reports to Collins instead of worrying about a President trying to take over.

I'd love to trade JGP and Lee this offseason instead of risking injury and a down year ahead of the trade deadline.

I agree. The priority needs to the NHL team.
