Shanny is President of Hockey Operations. That means the buck stops with him. He is responsible for selecting the GM. The GM reports to him. That means he gets to dictate the roles of the two positions and how much say over the roster they each have. Presumably, the PoHO delegates most of this to the GM, but ultimately the PoHO is the guy in charge.

I'm frankly not sure why there's interest in this guy. I would think you'd want to look toward teams that have had playoff success, rather than teams that can't quite figure things out.

Totally agree on this.

Part of building a successful organization means talented staff will garner attention from other markets.

Per my colleague @stefen_rosner - the NY Islanders have a heightened interest in #GoBolts assistant GM Mathieu Darche.

This would make sense. No guarantees with any hire, but this should be a very solid choice.

As @reporterchris reports in here, the Islanders have asked permission to speak with Shanahan. No word yet on what MLSE’s response was to the Isles.

Why?

I don’t believe it.
I think they are close to a hiring/s.

Edit: Thinking by end of week

So they can lure Tavares back to the Islanders?

If this is true, could this mean they want Darche as GM?

Seattle continues to work through its process in hiring a head coach. Toronto has granted the Kraken permission to speak with Lane Lambert. Mitch Love and David Quinn believed to be among those in the mix as well.

I think they are looking at GM first to get to the compound and draft. It might be possible for president that they are waiting for current guys contracts to expire in order to talk with them (I.E Jeff Gorton)?

I thought Gorton was out? Gorton and Darche would be very nice. Shanny or Bergevin not as nice.

The NY Islanders have been granted permission to speak with Toronto Maple Leafs President, Brendan Shanahan

Leading the search for a new front office on Long Island has been Operating Partner John Collins. Collins and Shanahan worked simultaneously for the NHL from 2009-2014, with Shanahan in the role of NHL Vice President of Hockey Operations and Business Development, followed by NHL Senior Vice President.

Wouldn’t they want the poho to have some kind of input on who the GM is going to be?

I never understood a scrum at the end of the game. So cheap.

You could say it is cheap; you could also look at it as setting a tone for the next game. This is also the reason why team usually do not have their top players on the ice.

I dunno. It seems they’re farther along with the GM interviewing vs POHO. 🤷‍♂️

This whole process is dragging. I really hope they’re close to their decision. It’s a month already.

I don't look at it as setting a tone. To me it says you didn't get it done when it counted. It's an admission of defeat. You want to set a tone - do it while the clock is running.

General consensus among the media guys covering it, including the bigger national guys like Seravalli and Friedman, seems to be that they are/were likely to make a decision of some sort this week. Maybe that's only on GM but it would go a long way for the fanbase to have them announce.........anything

But there is lots of business to get done and they need to get going on that ASAP. Important negotiations, draft, other RFA/UFA negotiations...lots of stuff.

If Shanny is hired as POHO, I hope he learnt from what happened with the Leafs and he does not try to play GM behind the scenes. He can be a good hire if he can avoid past mistakes.

Some talk in league circles that Brendan Shanahan will be interviewed for the dual role as president of hockey operations and general manager with the Isles.

You may not be wrong UIF. They lost that Canes series due to the offense and not coaching. I'm trying to remember he seemed to do some strange things the next year. He may not be a great coach, but he was in a tough spot with the Islanders and was not given a lot of time.

At least with this, Shanny will not need to be a shadow GM and there will be no doubt who is in control. I'm trying to be positive today.
