Yes, the only change we should make is signing Nelson back to an 7-year deal. This should put this team over the top. I mean making their backup goalie look bad on the back end of a back to back was amazing. - Nfdbulldawg
I would like to see him sign a 3 year $6MM dollar per contract with us. Have the assets we received for him and our best 2 way center back. Might make sense. But I’m sure there would be something wrong with that. Especially if Lou did it.
Disappointed in him this year. I would see what he might brings back. - nyisles7
Not sure what he would bring back. Though I am hesitant to give him an 8 for 8 deal. I know giving him a shorter deal would open him up to UFA but just giving him a max deal right now does not seem like the right choice in my opinion.

I would try and lock him up to another bridge like deal. If his agent has unreasonable demands you look at other options. It’s short sighted to trade a young defenseman after one poor season imo.

Unless of course it’s an 8 year deal at a good number, like $6MM. He would still be tradable. He’s definitely has the skill. Skates well, good puck transporter and certainly has the shot. Thing is I’m scared he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. Sometimes his on ice awareness lacks. Which puts him into tough situations. I’m hoping I’m wrong and it’s just the new system Roy is coaching.
That said he has been a disappointment the last two years.

I am willing to sign him to a bridge deal. "It’s short sighted to trade a young defenseman after one poor season imo.", it would also be short sighted to give him an 8 x 8 deal at this point as well.
Yes, he is young. Yes, he has shown signs of quality. But his inconsistency stands out more than those other attributes. That inconsistency is one of the reasons the pp is non-existent this year. He had 24 of his 70 pts on the pp last year. This year 8 pts on the pp. The lowest total in the last four years.
I think he would be better served by moving him for a young forward or assets. The alternative is not very appealing.

He is lacking in hockey IQ. Something that is not taught.

Yep that’s why I said if his agent is being unreasonable you look at other options. Most defenseman don’t have an untarnished trajectory. Pretty standard for them to have a down year actually. Wasn’t long ago this thread was panning Devon Toews bcs he had a lackluster playoffs(his first playoffs btw).

Exactly. Again he has the skill. Not an easy decision because he is still relatively young.
At 25 especially for a Dman there’s time to grow but time is ticking.

I get what you're saying. I was never down on Toews. I still think it was the worst trade by Lou as and Isles GM. Leddy was two years older I get that. But Toews showed more hockey IQ then Dober.

Tough decision for the team and Dobson. The kid is playing uninspired and believe me I agree he’s completely lost out there at times. That’s not what we saw not to long ago. Or I should say those same mistakes were far less. Not sure if he’s unhappy playing here or he’s just having an off year but he’s certainly not helping his cause.
