Because he shares the same perspective and views of his agent on how to maximize earnings.

He has until draft day or a couple days before imo. Tre will trade for the rights of a player or 2 he wants like Tanev, and he will move on if he is not signed.

Marner knows he’ll get paid big time in free agency no matter how the playoffs go but will stay if he gets a number close to that: no reason for him to hurry.

If Leafs have a bad spring, something has to give. Marner’s cap space is the biggest move they have to change things up: no reason for them to hurry.

I'm with you on this approach at this point. Rewarding him for fantastic regular season stats hasn't worked out well in the past. It really hasn't worked out well for any of the core players in Toronto (from the perspective of MLSE).

Yep. Imagine if he has an amazing playoffs. Gets to then go to the table with the 4 Nations, his best ever season AND a great playoffs. If he sucks in them...he still has the other two which is more than enough to get all the money.
