If you are building a team from scratch to win a cup right now who is the number 1 defenseman you would take?

Now there are 9 other teams doing the same thing going after you. Who are they taking?

Let's not get cute.

Hands down its Makar.

This would be ideal but means they are getting rid of the big 3 this summer

Thats why I made a note to say that Id be fine keeping Panarin unless someone offered a massive haul for him.

Will get a blog on the game as soon as I can.
Popped in to catch up on comments and saw this. Here's mine, in no order, as to those who can take you to a Cup.

Hedman, Seider, Heiskanen/Harley, Doughty, you pick which one from Vegas, to me, it's Theodore, Carlson, Werenski, Morrissey, and Parayko. Just out on D-Ham and Q Hughes to be that player.

In no particular order:

Makar
Hughes
Werenski
Hedman
Josi
Slavin
Heiskanen
Mcavoy
Fox
Toews

It was hard to limit to 10 after the first 7 or so. Others for consideration:

Forsling
Morrisey
Tanev
Bouchard
Dahlin

Fox comes behind John Carlson and Coltol Parayko and Dougie Hamilton? Quinn Hughes doesn't get picked #2 for you? Where is Dahlin?

Anyway, my point is even if you picked Fox #15 that means he is a top pairing defenseman. The initial comment was that Fox is not a top pairing guy, which is crazy to me. He lacks footspeed and physicality but is elite at everything else. Just because he needs a specific kind of partner doesn't mean he can't be THE guy

I'd probably replace McAvoy with Dahlin, but this is more or less the correct list with some room for debate towards the bottom two or three guys (not the guys on your list, just whoever would be ranked 8/9/10)_

I think Brock Faber is already a top 15-20 Dman. Ekblad is worth a mention.

Truthfully, I wouldnt take Fox, offensively he is good, defensively he has been bad. I wouldnt call him a cornerstone of a team now. IMO

Maybe this is my fault for being unclear but the ORIGINAL point I was contesting was that he should be on the 2nd pair and not the 1st. Seems like most are hung up on the fact that he is not big or physical, which is true, but does not mean to me that he cannot play on the first pair as a top guy. He's not just an offensive defenseman, a la Erik Karlsson.

Dahlin is in that mix as well. Slavin too. I view Hughes as an offensive blueliner, my focus was on complete blue liner. He is there, just not at the level of some of the others. I think similar on Bouchard, who is improving defensively, but has the knock of being a PP specialist.

I said the list was in no particular order. Plus was not including Fox since he had been talked about previously. I was focused on others. When Fix is right, he is not overly physical, but finds a way to come out with the puck in his own zone and come up ice.

Fox is almost completely reliant on his elite skating to be a good defender (nothing wrong with that), however he hasnt been right since last year.

I think he is. Prior to getting hurt in the playoffs last year he showed he was. Just needs to get back to 100% health wise
