Tavares isn't taking a 50% pay cut to stay. I mean, maybe, weirder things have happened. But I seriously doubt it.

Tavares' previous "discount" made him the 2nd highest paid player in the NHL at the time.

He's not playing for peanuts.

Reports stating the Canes pursue Marner in FA. Go nuts. He'll get you to the dance, then griddy all the way to the first tee.

Can the resident Canes fan chime in on this -BINGO what do you say? Is Marner the missing piece to lead the Canes to the promised land?

Yet Marner has more career playoff points than all of them and has led the team in scoring multiple times. There have been years where Matthews had 1 goal in the playoffs. Does that erase everything else he's ever done?

It's a stupid argument. There is nobody available who you can logically replace him with at a lower price that gives you a better chance to win.

You won't replace MM but that doesn't mean you have to overpay or even stay the course. The "better chance to win" is a fools argument. Wild poop happens and nobody knows. If I'm Tree I'm happy to wait. If he signs for a number you're happy with great. If he prefers 7x14 and refuses 8x13 then so be it.

Hypothetically, I toss short term deals at Benn and Bennett and Marchand and shake poop up.

Maybe it works ...maybe it doesn't ...but you can't be scared of change.

I think the only way that happens is via some kind of backroom handshake deal involving a lucrative job in the organization after he retires as a player. He agrees to a major hometeam discount to play his last few years out and then becomes assistant director of scouting or director of player development, corporate community ambassador, or some such.

Again, letting a player in his prime walk and signing broken, end of their career players would be the most dumbass Leafy thing I've ever seen.

If the Leafs want to "change" something, keep changing the depth players and over the hill players and rebuild the supporting cast.

Again, letting your leading point scoring player in his prime walk and signing broken, end of their career players would be the most dumbass Leafy thing I've ever seen. I'd say staying the course gives you a 40% of success but 40% is still higher than 0% which is what they would get going to the retirement home to replace core players.

If the Leafs want to "change" something, keep changing the depth players and rebuild the supporting cast.

I'd love to see a list of examples where a team got rid of their #1 point producer (for NOTHING), replaced them with UFAs in their mid to late 30s and then won a Cup. I'd be shocked if you can even find one.

It's not really an indictment of the entire core, ONE of those things is not like the others.

Does this chart mean that 91, 88 and 34 don't show up in games 1-4?

All 4 of these guys bare a similar responsibility ...win or lose.

For me the important take-away is that, Matthews and Marner in particular, look like guys that have let the pressure get to them in big playoff games. You can see it in their faces when the stress ramps up.

We know it's a real thing. We know that part of Treeliving's strategy to help those two was to bring in a few "characters" to help manage the anxiety level in the room. Reaves, for example, sucks at hockey but is by all accounts was brought in to increase the "chill the (frank) out level" of the room.

As an aside ...I'm the Ryan Reaves of my house. If we're hosting my wife does everything b/c she's full of anxiety ...I do nothing (except hit the LCBO) and tell her and the kids that it's all good and to chill the (frank) out ...and our parties are great.

I don't know CC, the man hasn't played in three years.

Aside from Mario Lemieux and to a much lesser extent Guy Lafleur, both generational talents, I can't remember a player that came back after such a long time and still had a high enough level to be a major contributor for his team.

Maybe not a major contributor but the Av’s are playing pretty well right now and he’s bound to help somewhat. Amazing that either Colorado or Dallas goes out in the first round.
