I read yesterday that they were prepared to offer between $500-600M for 14-15 years. Not sure how I feel about paying an almost 40 year old $40M per, but you just hope he dominates for the first 10 years of that contract.
What an obscene amount of money. - Whipper
I know I don't have the same mentality as a professional athlete, but if I signed a contract for a half billion dollars of guaranteed money, it would then be hard for me to wake up before dawn every day in the offseason to work out. |

Also, didn't Vladdy say he wouldn't discuss a contract after the start of spring training? Was that just a bluff? - Whipper
Its his agent that wil be doing the discussions.
Vladdy will just say yes or no
Apparently they were only offby $50m |

Also, didn't Vladdy say he wouldn't discuss a contract after the start of spring training? Was that just a bluff? - Whipper He's not worth that coin. He's had 2 good seasons in Toronto and has no hardware to show. He wants to be paid money like a perennial Superstar. He's not worth more than 10 years, on a contract. He'll eat all of the hot dogs that were reserved for Phil Kessel and take up the sauna because of his rotund figure, once he gets pork chop money from Rogers. Better to deal him before the season starts and bring back a couple of blue chip prospects plus picks. This team isn't going anywhere, with, or without him.

No doubt, he's not worth it but if this team lets him walk, the fanbase isn't going to put up with another/extended rebuild. They have one of the worst farm systems in baseball, it's a VERY bleak future without Vladdy and the seeming inability to attract free agents. |

Nope, its an overpayment for sure and contract will be bad in 5 years time.
But its the price to attract talent. |

So I must confess I don't follow baseball in the offseason, but I'm just reading the Athletic's AL East predictions, and the payrolls are crazy:
Yankees: $284.8M
Jays: $242.8M
Bosox: $196.5M
Orioles: $160M
Rays: $81.7M
Predicted order of finish:
1. Yankees: 88-74
2. Orioles: 85-77
3. Bosox: 84-78
4. Rays: 81-81
5. Jays: 80-82
How the frank are we predicted to finish below a team with one third our payroll?

Out of 30 teams they were ranked 20th, so not one of the worst per say.
You could trade vlad and boost that up.
Vlads WAR ismt the greatest, so its not like he couldn't be replaced.

he has had 2 very good seasons (maybe a little better than very good) and 1 good season.
he would have an MVP if not for the best player in League history doing historic things

Cause the rays have great scouting and the jays have some bloated contracts....Springer etc. |

I'm a bandwagon Jays fan at best, but isn't there some axiom in baseball that says go all-in on Vladdy, lose for a decade? I know it doesn't rhyme but it sounds sage to me. |

depends what projections you look at. I like FG
they have
yankees 86
red sox 85
Orioles 84
Jays 83
Rays 82
4 total wins separating all the teams.
but the Rays are always low payroll and usually contend, thats been going on for years. Well run team. but they havent won a WS yet

The other thing with Vlad, is he just turned 26 a few days ago. He is still so young.
Jose Bautista didnt even start his career with the Jays until he was 27, his breakout season was at 29.
you are getting his 26-36 (up to 40) years.
most players prime years. |

I keep referring back to the Bobby Witt deal
11 years / 288m
No way I pay that much for a 1st baseman
Especially until he’s 40

Yeah, but won't they have a lot more cash this year?
I heard that every home game this year is going to be a sellout.

I saw they have cotton candy fries and other carnivalesque stunt foods at Jays games this season.
I see what you're doing Jays you bastards. They got me with the cheap hot dogs a couple or three times. |

its def worth noting hes a 1B.
Bobby whitt is 1.5 years younger than Vlad (not much younger), KC def took a risk giving him the deal before last season where he went bonkers good.
they had a similar offense year, but the diff (6.4 war vs 9.4) is the def value

what is with russia and using old tires for literally everything
they decorate roads, schools, gardens, and just about everything with them
what the (frank) is their fascination with old tires. seriously.
if we can figure this out maybe we can help them un(frank) their brains - daeth
they don't know what to do with them is my guess
maybe they are re-tiring them ...... |

Wow good Leafs win and all but man the league needs to look into blowing plays dead on referee/puck interference plays.
Imagine if that wacky play cost a team the Stanley cup?
