He said he wants to focus on the season/playoff push. Take that for what you think it's worth.

This might explain why the Flyers didn't wait until the end of the season to fire Torts.

"This falls on me,” Tortorella told reporters after the game. “I’m not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we’re at right now. But I have to do a better job.

Saw that quote the other day after the Flyers got spanked by the Leafs.
Not a good look when the coach is essentially publicly asking to be let go.

Yeah, you can post some semblance of logic, but really no one knows.

Personally I like Tocchet, I would like to see a 3 year extension and cut your losses next season if it doesn’t work out. FA has been paying fired coaches and GM’s for years, doesn’t count against the cap and it’s not my money so no sweat off my balls.

I wonder why he hasn't been re-signed yet if that was the plan??
- dbot

Idk if it’s in any rush on either side. Stays or goes I’m ok with it if it has to happen. Next up is who is a good candidate? I like to keep Foote & Gonchar.

I think management will try to sign him only if the team makes a huge push in the next couple weeks and/or makes the playoffs

Perhaps they've already tried and he wants to see where this team is by the end of the season and what his other possible options are in the summer.
I'm of the mind that if they really were sold on him and wanted him, it would have already happened.

Sounds good to me. See no reason why not unless some stellar coach out there like Carberry in Washington is waiting.

Yeah, whether it's one side or both, it seems like there's some tentativeness. While I'd be curious to see what this roster looks like under a different coach, I'm a little concerned about losing the defensive structure he brought that the team was sorely lacking before

For me losing the system culture & identity he created. The latter was lacking greatly for years.

Looking ahead…

$15.76m cap space for 2025/26
9F 6D 2G signed
- Karlsson,Aman & Silovs not included
- Willander ELC costs say 1m
- Raty RFA makes the jump say 1m
- Forbort UFA 2/2m
$11.76m for 10F 8D 2G
- leaves it as 3F’s needed
- Boeser UFA?
- Suter UFA?
- UFA or trade or the farm?

I'd low ball Boeser.
i'd offer Suter something similar to Joshua, Hoglander money/term.
Take a run at Marner or Ehlers (but i'm not liking Vancouver's chances there) and/or look at an offer sheet for their RFA's - Knies or Vilardi.

I dunno who that is.
I don't think the Canucks would suit a rookie coach imo.

Honestly, if he hasn't been signed by now, they aren't going to, no team is going to want to go into the draft and beyond without a coach signed at least 3-4 years in order to attract free agents and to get drafted players an idea of what sort of system they're going to have to learn to play in and where they might fit in if/once they make the big team.

It doesn't help that Tocchet has no real offensive system and focuses on defence and transition. It shows that if Hughes isn't playing, they just can't take advantage of it and they have no real shooters that are good off the rush consistantly which is a pre-requisite for a system that relies on transition play.

Agree to all except Ehlers & a Knies OS won’t be cheap. Cost more than a 1st easily. Prolly a 1st 2nd & a 3rd.

I’m not concerned with an offensive system but the PP is not impressive. Take away Hughes & there is nothing.

Take away Hughes and there's no offense, period... again, we have no shooters that can keep goalies and d-men honest and play the shot to open up for the backdoor pass. Boeser was supposed to be that shooter but ever since he wrecked his back and wrist he hasn't been the same. Last year was an anomaly, he's at best a 20-30 goal scorer and not elite, JDB was clearly a mistake and Petey isn't the player he was before. When you have no one that can rip the puck and score on the fly, it's really easy to defend against and Tocchet's never been good at drawing up offensive plays to take advantage of perimeter and half-board play

Agree with all of that. Mainly why I contend lacking an elite playmaker is priority. Marner again for all situations.

Unlikely but take a big swing
