I'd only add that he gets a heavy anchor when it's comes to usage. He's the David Kampf of the blueline. Nothing but heavy heavy dzone starts and relative to the top two pairings he gets little time with Matthews and Tavares.

I'm not saying he isn't the 6th or 7th best Leaf blue liner but I'm saying his possession numbers are heavily influenced by usage. Berube's pretty rigid about how he uses certain guys.

For whatever reason ...Benoit's GF% is way better than is XGF%.

In general the Leafs weren't that great in March. They were 8-5-2 but at 5v5 they were outpossessed, outshot, outchanced and outscored. Their revitalized powerplay basically stepped up for our below average performance otherwise.

In that month all defensemen had a Corsi below 50%, but Benoit was a team-worst 38%. Most people hate Corsi but it is a decent indicator of puck possession. Benoit's actual results were mediocre (below league average) with a GA/60 of 2.64 - but he was 4th on the team with Rielly, 3.02, and OEL 3.98(!) faring worse. Benoit's xGA was bloody terrible for the month, being a team worse 3.02 brought on by his team worst 12.6 HD chances against / 60 (which is nearly 2 more than OEL's second worst 10.8).

Right now it feels like Benoit is skating on reputation - he showed up as an AHL defenseman, stepped up, was physical, threw some nice hits - didn't back down and played hard. This past month he has been slow, made poor decisions, picked poor routes to the puck or the carrier and made some tragically bad passes up the middle. All of these things you simply don't do when your ONE job is to not do any of them. We don't ask him to be offensive or contribute to the scoring but in return his job is to not do that stuff and to ideally play with a physical edge.

Keep up the good work. A 3 game winning streak will wrap it up for you guys.
