Such a great movie and performance by him.

He'll always be Iceman for me.

Real Genuis FTW

Oh and Rielly just sucks. Plain and simple, don't need stats. No offense and no defense. He's just mentally done playing hockey IMO.

A little bit extreme. But I'm here for it until he is hoisting the Conn Smythe or scoring 70+ next year

How dare a $7.5 mill d man with 35 points not play like a $10+ mill guy right?

A second pairing guy used on a top pairing, the expectations leaf fans have of him is on par with the expectations my gf has of me.

Nope, how about a defenseman with offensive upside who got paid $7.5m for playing that way, play like a defenseman with offensive upside who's worth $7.5m.

Not flying with me man, he’s the 29th highest paid d man in the league and he’s literally tied for 30th in points from a d man. You guys flat out expect too much.

35 points from Rielly is horsepoop especially when he's the worst defender on the team in his own zone.

Rielly is 33rd in points among defenders. When he was signed, he was the 6th highest paid defenseman in the NHL and finished 7th in points in 2022.

He had seasons where he scored 68 and 72 points in full seasons and averaged 50 points per 82 games during the shortened seasons.

He was paid to put up points. Nobody is expecting 10+ AAV type performance from him. Just what he was paid to do; be average on defense and be a top 10 scoring defenseman.

And the coach wasn’t a d first coach at the time he signed so it’s a different game now.

He’s fine to me, but unlike someone like you I don’t make extreme efforts at whining. Unless it’s Marner of course, then you’re more like a teen with a sock and a minute and a half of private time.

That has absolutely nothing to do with it. Rielly just sucks. Plenty of D have scored points under Berube in the past. Berube being a defensive coach has especially nothing to do with how bad Rielly sucked on the top PP unit.

Try harder to attack the argument, not the person.

Cale Makar is the 10th highest paid D but 1st in goals AND points. He got 9 AAV in 2022, scored 28 goals, 86 points and 29 playoff points in 20 playoff games, won the Norris, Conn Smythe and a Cup.

That's the difference between teams that win Cups and teams that get bounced in the 1st round every year. But we don't need Rielly to do that (although it would be nice if he did). We just need him to do what he did when he got signed. Effective on the PP, 50-55 points and the Leafs are comfortably in 1st place instead of clawing for it.

Oh you forgot some key things. Makar’s contract is 20% more and he signed as an RFA. Rielly signed as a UFA. Safe bet that Makar’s next contract will be notably higher.

Cheers.

The key point is that winning teams exceed the value of the contracts they give out. The Leafs tend to have too many that fall short of the value.

Like I already said, the Leafs don't need Rielly to be Makar. They just need him to be the Rielly we have already seen him be before. And he's 31. It's not like Leafs fans are looking at a 39 year old Giordano, wondering why he's not great anymore. This guy is right in the middle of what should be his prime years as a D-man. Instead, they get the worst year of his career.

New coach, new systems, 3rd or 4th new partner now?, and it’s all on him, got ya.

Keep rolling along with your negative thinking. I personally have no issue with him because I don’t consider real hockey to be anything like a video game. They’re humans and it shows from time to time, remember how JT’s career was essentially done last season?

Matthews isn’t playing nearly as good this year but everyone makes excuses for him, the favourability in leafland is truly adorable at times.

I would be fine with Rielly if he was at 50p and on the 1st PP. Not thrilled, but fine. Berube coached Torey Krug to 32 points in 51 games, so I think he doesn't hate the idea of scoring from the point.

Toronto is overloaded upfront and Berube knows it.

Won’t be shocked to see that changed in the off-season. How? No idea, the outcome of the playoffs will likely play a large role for Treliving’s off-season choices, at least that’s my bet.

Irrelevant to his failure on the PP.

Nobody is asking for video game results. Just what he did 3 years ago in his prime.

Matthews gets more slack considering he's literally an MVP and he's been playing injured the entire season.

Again Bruce, I hope he can recover and he likely will, but he's paid to BE the number one offensive defenseman. He doesn't need to be Norris leaders like Makar/Hughes/Hedman who do it all and kill it in every way, he needs to be like Karlsson, Carlson, some other guy in the son range who provide elite offense and fine...ish defense. Right now he is providing mediocre offense and mediocre defense. Maybe he will Rielly super sayan in the playoffs?

As I’ve mentioned I know it hasn’t been his strongest year by any means but I’m just choosing to give him the rope due to the the new coach, new systems, multiple partners, etc all at once kind of reasoning but let me add this…only for this one season. And sure I’m hoping it’s somewhat like Domi lately and the game starts to come around a little bit more and yes especially for the playoffs. He also has 35 with 8 to go, has that chance to hit 40 still.
