Marner has scored 100 points per 82 games 5 years in a row.
The difference is the playoff stats.
Much like Kadri, I'd love to see what Marner would do with MacKinnon and Makar though... - Rare_Jewel
No one’s interested in something you didn’t do…a beauty Canadian said that.
Per 82, on pace - garbage. Doesn’t matter. They popped a stat saying over 82 games Robertson scores more 5v5 this year or whatever it was than AM34 - so he’s better? Nope.
Hope he finally gets there though. The guy needs to be as confident as can be going into playoffs.
I'm not arguing about whether or not MLSE was justified in trying to trade Marner for Rantanen, or if it would be a good trade, or how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
I'm just saying that I'll bet a pitcher of beer and a plate of nachos that Marner was deeply hurt by it. It doesn't matter whether or not he should or should not feel hurt by it - his feelings are his feelings.

Oh I'm not arguing was just trying to understand if you meant it was a deal that had he said yes to would have been a good one is all.
I like beer and nachos too much to make that bet because it's a losers bet IMO - I agree with you that he was for sure hurt by it.
Too much talk about feelings has this now stuck in my head dammit.....

Marner was playing the game, trying to get a close to max money deal. The Leafs wanted him to sign before the deadline. He refused. Hence the Rantanen trade was available. He was ready to sign now, Marner was not. The Leafs had to explore this deal. Marner decided to nix it. Fine, then you FAFO. If he's butt hurt, then so be it. If the Leafs go out early, have Marner find his best deal, then make a deal to trade his rights so he can have an 8-year deal instead of 7

My dude:
I don’t disagree with what you wrote above.
I’m just saying I believe Marner is truly butt-hurt about it.

I would’ve all day traded Marner for Mikko - but agree that Marner was more than likely upset…not that Tre was wrong to ask (it’s his job and right as Marners right to say no), but Mitch is seemingly a very emotional individual.
Rantanen when playing with Nathan MacKinnon in Colorado: 64pts in 49 games (19 points on the power play);
Rantanen in Carolina - a defense first system: 6 points in 13 games (2 points on the power play);
Rantanen in Dallas: 15 points in 16 games (10 points on the power play).
I really think most of Rantanen's production comes from playing with MacKinnon and not as much of it is driven by Rantanen himself as he gets credit for.
I think I'd need more time to see him away from MacKinnon, but he just hasn't looked anywhere near as dangerous.

Marner cornered the Leafs into having to trade him, if he wasn't going to sign. He could have signed a deal like Nylander's but chose to go for top dollar. Rantanen was ready to sign a contract, while Marner kept playing the game. Do you blame the Leafs for not wanting to save the asset instead of losing him in free agency? Why didn't Marner sign the same dollar amount as Rantanen? Because he wants more. He may find that he won't get that contract elsewhere, since he can only sign a 7-year deal to play elsewhere.

There's no chance Rantanen signs the same deal in Dallas as he would in Toronto.
Marner "wants more" because everybody else gets to avoid taxes he doesn't get to avoid living in Toronto.
When agents and players are negotiating contracts, they're talking about what money they take home, not about cap hits.
Vlad Jr. signed a massive deal. He lives in Florida and gets signing bonuses. Otherwise, he doesn't sign in Toronto for "500" million otherwise it'd be more like 220 million deal for him.
