I am not sure the Leafs core players are durable enough to play more than one round of playoff hockey. I don't know if they can preserve enough energy for the long run since we never seen this scenario yet. - alex.TML
I worry less about the "core" and more about our goalies and our older players.
Tanev and McCabe? One blocked shot away from out for weeks. Woll? One sliding save away from out for weeks. Pacioretty? One gust of wind away from a body cast.
It's the most basic rule of playoff hockey; the healthiest team usually goes the furthest. |

Oh the old Hostess Smokey Bacon flavor in the bags with the foil insides and if you were lucky a WWF card were by far the absolute best.
Fries and Gravy was decent too, same for Pizza flavor.
My favs were always sour cream and Onion or BBQ. - Cush29
YES! Tear the side of the bag and have more room to grab a BUNCH.
Why would they ever stop the smokey bacon train?!?!?! WHY?!!!!!! |

Our goalies have been to blame for very few of our early exits. Always kept us in the series usually, where the offense fails to deliver. I don't think it's the healthiest teams that go deep, I believe it's the teams with the most players battling through injuries and pushing forward. So many times after a team wins a cup do we eventually hear about all the injuries their players were battling, after the fact. I agree with Alex in that i don't have much faith in our guys to be able to do that. Last year first round Matthews hurt (2 games) and Willy had headaches (3 games) and both missed games. In their absense, the 3 points marner got and 2 points Tavares got, with 2 goals combined, simply wasn't good enough. So hard to disagree that the core needs to do more and push through injuries.
While it's great to see we take the majority of our series to a game 7 and rarely get blown out in a series, it's also about damn time we took out a team without needing a game 7. |

I'm surprised to see people still caring about who we play first round. It's never been about who we play it's about how we play. We had Columbus one year and lost. We had the Habs one year and lost. We had a Boston team mere months away from a rebuild and lost. We've had the "easier" opponents and still lost.
This team has the skill and ability to beat teams like Ottawa, Florida and Tampa. The problem has always been whether they have the will and determination to do whatever it takes. |

It is pretty often you see some teams in the first round and you think this team is so good and bound to win the Cup, but in the second or third round blown by another team, who is fresher, healthier and more determined to do whatever it takes to win. |

Couldn’t agree more with all of this.
I have good seats for round one home game 4 and the eye is nothing I’d like more than not to have to use them.
I’m hopeful they have learned and been pushed by Berube enough that they understand HOW they need to play come playoffs FOR THE WHOLW PLAYOFFS.
Keefe really kinda let them run and gun all season and then tried to flip the script and have them play a way they hadn’t all year and we know how that worked out.
IMO they have played that playoff style Hockey far more often this year than others and that should help. |

1. I agree that playing good is good.
2. I’d rather not play Florida. They’re a hard team for the Leafs to play good against. |

The Leafs have the historical advantage and experience advantage over Ottawa the way the Bruins have the advantage over the Leafs. I'd say Ottawa is the best possible 1st round match for the Leafs.
But Tampa Bay is the best team in the division. They might not win the division but they have the best overall team in terms of stats; #1 in GF, 5th in GA, 5th in PP, 7th in PK. I would never count out Vasilevskiyy. Ever. He's 2nd in SV% with 60+ starts. Meanwhile, the Leafs still don't know who the "the guy" in net is going to be in the playoffs.
I'd still give the Leafs a better chance against Tampa Bay than Florida though because Tampa Bay's style allows the Leafs to be more loose and Florida grinds harder which usually beats the Leafs over 7 games.
Hopefully, history repeats itself and the Leafs can overcome Ottawa and Tampa Bay can take care of Florida in a long series so the Leafs don't have to face them next if they get the job done in the 1st round.
Winning two rounds is the absolute minimum for this team, this year. - Rare_Jewel
Leafs have owned the Lightning this year winning all 4 games and outscoring them 19-11.
Sens have owned the Leafs this year winning all 3 games and outscoring them 9-3.

How many times was Ottawa a top team who pounded the Leafs in the regular season only to lose in the playoffs?
The Leafs own Ottawa in the playoffs the way the Bruins own the Leafs.
Tampa Bay is still the best team in the division by the stats and Florida is probably the best built playoff team.
We have beat Tampa Bay in the playoffs before as well so there's some benefit in that too. |

The Leafs goaltending has sucked a few times in the playoffs but what I was referring to specifically was the health of our goalies who are both often injured and also now in uncharted waters having both reached their career high in games played.
I think everybody plays injured in the playoffs but the teams that usually win are the ones healthy enough to continue. There are certain injuries that are pain tolerant and others where the player won't return until next season.
I think my concern is more about older players with a history of injuries that won't allow them to play rather than the guys who would have to "push through" injuries. Matthews has been injured all season and has still been playing during the toughest games, putting up points, influencing games. |
