I’ve read, and someone also posted here, that he’s a defence first type of person. Now there wasn’t much context to that and I immediately jump to the conclusion of Mike Johnston or that one year in Washington they had that one coach I can’t remember the name of. There wasn’t much in the articles I’ve read other than what I mentioned… which was basically nothing lol

We all have the same fears of a mike Johnston 2.0 lmao. That’s why I want to make sure I have my expectations where they need to be, lol. Besides he hasn’t even signed yet…

I am just basically going off the vibes from all of the pens reporters and they all like Love the most, so naturally, I’m like ok let’s root for him…

Did we still have velluci this past year? He just signed with the blackhawks.

No, all assistants were let go (or their contracts expired, cant remember which) except for Quinn.

Mike Johnston never coached in the NHL and he ended up completely out of his depth. Maybe Love ends up no good but it won’t be for the same reason as Coach Farce

And defence first could just mean he wants people to play responsibly. Not some lockdown type of hockey. I just like to jump to conclusions after reading very little information.

Ha. End of the day no one really knows what Love is gonna be like because he’s never been HC before. Now’s a perfect time for that type of hire. If he sucks, we suck anyways and weren’t doing anything. None of our prospects are good enough to worry about “ruining” them like Krueger kinda did in buffalo and as a somewhat similar situation hire (although he did coach Edmonton for one season prior). And if he ends up being good, a really good head coach is about the only X factor we could possibly get that has a shot of making this team do anything before Crosby retires. There isn’t a single retread coach that will do that for us

Being an unknown is a plus for me. I like it. Been USA U18 HC in the past so definitely a developmental guy.

He’s definitely more of a developmental guy. The year before he started with the rangers, Lafrenier was labeled as a potential bust. The year he started he got 57 points. Anecdotal, maybe.

For sure. I bet he’s watched video on everyone in college since he was a USA head coach too. Needed to scout for his own team.

Now, we need some more young guys to develop! Better than we were a few years ago but still a ways to go still.

I really do see this as a massive change from what we are used to. The 1 mistake rookies who get benched for a week might be a thing of the past. The youth movement seems like it’s real.

Agreed. I think they will be given a longer leash which is gonna be a breath of fresh air. Seems like he is good at putting players in a position that plays to their strengths too. Time will tell.

Its an interesting hire. People said it'd be outside the box, and it is. On one hand its probably better than a Carle because he has NHL coaching experience.

Big developmental guy, worked with a lot of NYR's young guys, special teams guy.

All in all, anyone who has a strong opinion of it isnt being serious. It will depend on his ability to win over the room and insert his ideas.

It seems like this is Ovechkin's last year in the NHL. I would bet good money its Malkin's too. Them going into the Hall of Fame together would be cool.

I agree with this. No idea who he was 10 minutes ago. Sounds like he's got all the stuff on his resume you'd want. But then again why wasn't he mentioned before if he's so qualified?

New coach could give some young players a look Sully wouldn't give them. Looks like we might lose one in Ponomarov who may go to the KHL.

It just shows you how different Dubas runs things compared to Rutherford. Had Rutherford been running this search, we would have heard the name Dan Muse on the first day of the search.

I didnt see his name anywhere.

Looks like some Penguin folks clarified that his rights were simply traded from one KHL team to another.

Yeah, no idea who he is so hard to have a take. That in itself might be a bad thing as it is further signal that we are not in it to win it with Sid.

I'll still hold out hope that we try to put together at least a fun team with a good top line so Sid can still chase after 2000 points.

Ekblad isnt going anywhere based on his latest comments, so that should help out a bit with Karlssons value.

Will be an interesting month here. The Canucks have E Pettersson's NTC kicking in, I have a feeling they are going to trade him and knowing JR, that Hughes trade could happen at the same time.

Things I'd like to see prior to the draft:

1. Karlsson (50% retained), a 2025 2nd round pick and 2026 2nd round pick to the Canes for the Stars 2026 1st & the Stars 2028 1st. *I think its possible the Stars could implode in the not too distant future.

2. If we get the Rangers 1st, trade down with Montreal for #16 & #17. Thinking #12, #59 & Blomqvist for those two picks. Bonus points if we could somehow get Mailoux in there.

3. Lets do a super bad contract trade with Seattle. Jarry & Graves ($1.5M ret) for Grubbauer & Oleksiak. The reason I want to trade Jarry is because he always does whats worst for the team. When we are way out of it he plays great, when we are in the hunt, he sucks. He is better than Grubs, much better, but we have other goalie options. I like Oleksiak and would actually want to extend him, could also sub Burakowski instead for Oleksiak.

I just want both of those guys gone from our team.

My understanding is so far that is all that has happened, but Ponomarov as apparently talked openly about returning to the KHL and they sent out a promotional video like they expect him to be there. But Ponomarov still hasn't made his choice officially. Seems a strong possibility.

Not bad for the team really. He was a possibility to end up on waivers though a new coach might have given him a better chance. They'll retain his rights and maybe later he comes back to NA as a more developed player.

I tend to agree with you. This hire looks more like what you do on a rebuilding team. Which I'm not saying isn't the right choice.

Be very curious what the Panthers do with Ekblad and Bennett. Someone has to go either them or a trade.

The Robertson trade rumors make me tend to agree with you. They are in bad cap space.

I'd definitely do trades 1 and 3. I'd have to think hard on 2. For me the draft drops at 13. So I don't think I'd want to trade back and I'd rather like to keep Blomqvist. Just a year ago his rookie season was better than Murashov's and I think he might have been more hurt than he let on. I could still see him as our starter this year. The value is interesting, I just like what we have more.
