I hit the range yesterday after doing indoor simulators all winter.
Couldn't hit a ball to save my life.
You know it's bad when you keep looking at the yardage markers, shaking your head and muttering, "That can't be right." |

It is important to properly read the signals when you see Leaf fans reverting to anger, threatening tactics, name calling and personal insults. The responses are essentially self protective. These fans believe they have been beaten around so badly, especially over the last few years. They have been ridiculed, trivialized and dismissed. They have been excluded from the competitive hockey debate. So, they make irrational hockey claims. They come to despise anyone who forces them to face reality.
This summer is about a grand illusion. Matthews, they tell themselves, can do better than Tavares, Stamkos or Eichel or, dare we even say, McDavid. He will instantly pull the Leafs into the playoff mix in his first year and "we will matter again."
When the reality of the situation finally settles into the thinking of Leaf fans they will revert to lashing out against others. They are unconsciously trying to inflict the humiliation they feel unto to others. They want others to know the pain that they are living every day. Leaf fans, for example, do not hate Karlsson. They just intuitively know that he causes them so much pain. It has everything to do with how much Senator fans love Karlsson. They adore his skill his speed and the fact that he is so unique and special. He laughs, he smiles and delights. He is so much like Alphie and entirely fused into our hearts. Leaf fans just want a player who is special for them, someone to love, somebody that they know they can believe in.
One last thought. Shame is always held together by a deeply held wound. You can only escape the wound by naming it, by defining and by choosing not to let it define you from the secret recesses of your own mind. I stopped feeling ashamed when I finally stopped drinking the blue and white kool aid and called out and named the pain. When I publicly let go of the Leafs, when I chose to no longer carry the burden of their failure, I became free. So, I understand their bitterness, their invective and mostly their hurt. I understand how badly they have suffered. I try not to add to that suffering by responding in kind when they become so disrespectful of others. - systemtool
There are some pretty (frank)ed up Leafs fans, like Billy.
But I don’t think the hockey team is the cause of his (frank)eduppedness.

The Leafs were a last place team. The Leafs are a last place team.
Matthews is not McDavid or Eichal or perhaps, even Laine or Puljujarvi. Yet Leaf fans have created this huge expectation around a kid that was not nearly the force of the Finns on the big stages of international hockey last year.
Not sure why the Leafs have delayed in signing him to a contract. Perhaps they think he is going to need some AHL development time. Nobody is hoping against Matthews, he should be a good player. But, there is absolutely nothing in his track record that suggests he will be an impact player in the NHL next year. Perhaps, there is a fatal flaw in the Leaf charism. If Matthews is put out head to head against veteran NHL centres every night and fans expect him to outperform all comers it is going to be a very long and disappointing winter for the blue and white.
I understand the importance of the summer season for Leaf fans. It is an opportunity to renew hope and create a bond with the team in the belief that next year will see the Leafs finally triumph. It is the Oiler model of a few years ago that had Yakupov (like Matthews, an older profile draft pick) dominating scoring in future NHL seasons or RNH being the slickest centre to come along in years.
Always keep in mind the notion that "we are different," is something that is really well understood. We know Matthews is not McDavid, not even close. We want to believe that he is better than Yakupov. Likely he is in the same range as RNH, but he will likely struggle to produce numbers as good as RNH got in his rookie year (18 goals, 34 assists in 64 games).

This is a classic case of someone doing everything to convince themselves of a false reality because they are fearful of the future probability.

I once called in sick because a raccoon had trapped itself in our daughters' little backyard softball hitting net.
That was a fun morning.
Especially for the Toronto Animal Services worker who got bit while she was freeing the filthy animal. |

Back from my one month furlough for criticizing Conor Bedard.
He looks slow and disengaged. I wonder, is he's just disengaged and is ready for his proverbial summer vacation. The Habs need to sit him in the press box and start finding an exit strategy to get him off the roster, for next year. That young Habs team needs to find some size and leadership. They're a very good young team but get beaten up along the boards. |

I played last friday at Royal Ashburn. Pretty decent day, had some heavy rain at some point but didn't last long. Short game was an absolute gong-show but managed to get out of there with an 84 which is a pretty sweet opening round for me. |
