That’s a big win for Toronto. Pressure spot. They’ve been my SC pick

Nothing Drury does will do it for you

I’d bet they give Sullivan a very lengthy deal. They need stability.

- Slimtj100

To be fair he stated his opinion on his hierarchy of coaches well before this announcement and Sullivan was not at the top for the reasons he stated. He isn’t hating Drury strictly for this choice. He previously stated what he would have done.

For the record, I am good with Sullivan if that is official. I am also on board with Torts returning. This team needs discipline.

Id rather coach Q. Torts would be a good addition for defense coach.

Discounting Tort's ego, has a former coach of a team ever returned to that team as an Asst? I'm assuming it has, but I can't think of one
- ELew11

I don't know how much of an ego Tort's really has. His issue is changing as a person to deal with the "new" and how players have evolved mentally.

Be an interesting assistant coach. Pretty sure it was him that mentioned being an assistant has a lot of perks in that you just worry about your section of the team and leave the headaches to your head coach.

Expect the Rangers to make Mike Sullivan’s hiring official in the next few minutes.

As reported last night, they get their man.

Torts and Sullivan have worked together forever, it's not like Torts will be an assistant for somebody who he doesn't have a very long relationship with

I must say if Torts as an assistant is true it's a sad day for me.

Either he needed to be back as an analyst, as I really loved the way he broke down games.

Or he needed to be a head coach. There aren't enough head coaches out there that keep the media in check like Torts. Maybe Sullivan will throw him a bone and make him assistant coach in charge of media relations

The beauty of Sullivan and Torts going to New York is that they were division rivals and got to see the Rangers a lot first hand live over the past couple years.

Should make the transition a lot easier in figuring out what type of style Sullivan wants to run, what he and Torts think they can get out of players that maybe didn't look good last year, and finally what type of players they should add.

bottom line is that several NY players essentially quit at various points of the year last year and that wont be happening with these two guys

Accountability the key buzzword. We have said that before and thought Gallant and Laviolette would enforce that. Hope has to be Sullivan and whoever is his assistants (Torts) will make sure it’s enforced.

It’s why it’s still important to still change out the core some. Need some new faces in that locker room

I never would have guessed beforehand that Laviolette would be a guy that players would quit on and nothing would happen

it just seemed like Laviolette didnt want to be here himself anymore

I know God already intervened and had us win two lotteries, but if he could make 3 times a charm on Monday that would help

If we stay around where we’re at, Obrien (C) Aitcheson (LHD) Mrtka (RHD) would be my top 3 at each position. Mrtka probably the least pressing position, but definitely the type of player I’d love on the defense. 6’6 200+ lbs.

I still don't know what style Sullivan's teams play lol. I just want to know. I'm not saying he's good or he's bad. By all accounts he is good. But he also had Crosby, Malkin, Letang in their primes.
- picklerick

Sullivan's system is generally speed through the neutral zone, relentless forecheck, defensively sound. That is the one sentence description of how he likes to play. He is very North-South with good passes and guys constantly moving.

When he has the right players, his system is excellent and hard to match, but when he doesnt have the players, he is still going to play that way, maybe with some minor tweaks.

Yes, he had Crosby, Malkin, and Letang in their primes, but he also took a team that had underperformed for years and turned them into stanley cup pedigree in less than 5 months.

The most important thing is that he is going to command respect in that locker room and organization.

you gonna get a lot of Mcilrath comparisons if they take a huge defensive defenseman at 11th overall

but, personally, Im not saying that would be the wrong thing to do

The hope now is that management is in sync with the style of play desired and type of players needed. Clearly a good relationship exists between Sullivan and Drury. Now the system needs to be enforced and utilized.

We see what Cam Fowler is doing right now (along with the Hutson Bros) and we want another McIlrath type prospect?

Set the franchise back another 5 years why don't we.

Falls in line with what Drury wants to do now. I wonder if Breadman is the one who gets moved. Idk if he can handle this coaching staff

Great point! They know as much as anyone what needs to change
