Tocchet to the Flyers.

Book it.

I think its pretty much a done deal. Dont hate it but dont like it either. PHLY suggests people within the NHL think hes one of the best coaches out there where fans think the opposite.

In my limited viewing i didn’t like what I saw. Is he falling off like a Shane wright?

Wright had a good year this season. Hes also spent most his time as a #rd liner because hes stuck behind Stephenson and Beniers. 44 points in his rookie season is nothing to scoff at. Thats a better season than Jack Hughes in his first season in the NHL granted Hughes was 18 compared to Wright at 21 but you can easily say he can be in the ball park of Hughes, maybe a Schiefele

It's amazing how folks get hung up on names. Other than last season, what has Tocchet done as a coach? He flamed out at both Tampa and Arizona, and this year went sideways in a hurry too.

What value would he bring to take this team to the next step?

None but coaching is overrated in the NHL. Talent wins. The coach has a limited impact good or bad.

I believe most if not all GM's and Presidents will disagree.

Naturally you need the talent. I think no matter who they hire will not find success with the Flyers. They are a far ways off.

Of course GM’s would disagree because they are responsible for the talent. That is also the reason all the Flyers scouts blamed Hextall and development for the failures of that time instead of themselves for the players they picked.

Hextall deserved the blame that came his way as he was not very good at his job. Flyer drafting and development has been an issue for a long time now; no matter who was the current GM. They go hand in hand.

Players will also disagree that coaching has a limited impact.

To add: the next coach who takes the Flyers must realize it will be a very tough task to try to turn this around in a 3- or 4-year window. Almost impossible to me. By turn around I am talking just making the playoffs. To me any young college coach or the like may want/insist on say 6- or 7-year deal so they have the allotted time to try to succeed (unless they just want the money which one can certainly understand) . They may want that commitment. Whether they get it will be a different story.

Now retread like Tocchet would take the 4 year deal is my guess as he has noting to lose.

How many coaching hires will they allot Briere? Does he have full autonomy to make this decision?

Development is nonsense in the NHL since top of the roster players spend the majority of their development time outside of the organization. The overwhelming majority of top 6 forwards and top 4 defensemen spend very limited time in the AHL under team control before they enter the league.

I imagine Briere will get two coaches before he’s fired. I disagree it will take 3 years to just get into the playoffs. Depending on what they do, I think one more season as a bottom 10 team and then 2026 they should be able to get in. Not because they are talented but because the east stinks.

Then the Flyers are simply drafting all the wrong players. Is that what your saying? Flyers can’t even draft/develop 4th line players while other teams do.

Personally, I think it is laughable to see them as playoff team in 2026/27. They are not looking to finish in the bottom 10. If that happens, it will not be design. They have said it is time to add players. Playoffs are the goal next season. To think otherwise is foolish to me.

I think the Flyers scouts stink and are picking the wrong players. They draft the very definition of mid and have been doing so since Holmgren got promoted to GM.

Briere and Jones have continually mentioned that 2026 will be their big offseason. Briere has said he expects to add and be more competitive next year but never mentioned playoffs. It’s the same bs he said his first two years on the job knowing that the roster stunk. I expect some bandaids and an 8-12 in the draft finish next season.

As far as 2026, I think they will have a shot at the last playoff spot if Briere makes a couple of decent moves between now and then.

I dont agree. Weve been able to draft some really good players. We have rarely been in a position to draft an elite player. Hexy while missed on many picks, he did nail some good ones in Konecny, Sanheim. Ghost.

Only bright spot of Fletchers tenure was his draft. York, Foerster, Brink, Gauthier (would have been a good pick if he stayed.), Bump and Andrae

Briere has done a promising job of drafting as well with Michkov, Bonk, Zavragin, Barkley and Luchenko. Hopefully this draft we can snag some other real good ones.
