As for UFA C’s not much out there in ‘25 or ‘26. Mostly real old stop gap types.

Getting 1sts for this draft could net 2 C’s with top 6 ceilings.

Yeah, given his current perceived value, I would bet on him improving rather than trading him for pennies on the dollar.

I'm not convinced you would get that package from Nashville atm anyways.

I’m not convinced either but win now mode has its pressures. Get younger & lose Stamkos’s salary is a cap dump when 38 on expiry. Also gain cap. EP is worth 2-1sts this draft & maybe some more so boils down to patience or try to create an offseason bidding war. If Hughes has issues with EP then a dramatic shift is needed.

Patience is key imo.

Also, get out of here with postulating about players having issues with each other.

I think adding Nemec, a younger top 6 center, and a top prospect (plus cap space/additional signings) makes the team more whole. And the original statement wasn't about making them better, it was keeping them competitive.

In your mind, which team is going to give up a top six center and young defenseman (both roster players) for a couple years of Hughes?

- NewYorkNuck

That will make them better when it counts.

Watching QH play is special, it's a rare treat fans get to enjoy when they follow a team.

Watching QH play 30 minutes a night in the playoffs when it gets heavier isn't something I relish.

On Hughes he did say he was turning off his phone & getting away from hockey for a while. I’m sure he was more than unhappy on how many things played out last season & needed the reset. Plain to everyone playing with his brothers is on his mind but not positive he would bolt unless the next set of changes show him the roster is a long retool. His pride & character to be a winner cannot be ignored as long as PA & the next coach can turn it around in a substantial way. It always comes back to EP as well as if Hughes believes in him. If he doesn’t then Hughes likely to be moved being July 1st is the 1st EP D day. Secondary to everything is the new blood making a large impact & how Demko comes outta the gate.

It’s a real conundrum & bad timing of circumstances but an optimist could say nowhere to go but up. Great in goal a full training camp of the remade D will be the telling sign of if the foundation is there to build on. Scoring by committee up front. A coach with a fresh system. Total buy in starting with coming to camp in top condition. Prospects breaking out. Plenty to ask for.

Hughes can drag a willing team into the PO’s but then it’s all on them after his heavy lifting. He is a special player.

Just spitballin all over the map lol

I do predict we’ll see a different look on the systems & a hungrier team. Identity & consistency has to be the staples.

Blown leads not closing out games was a real problem along with the PP.

Not great only 1 prospect hits the top 5. Kudryatsev. Others who went to games could add their views on others like Leki & Klimovich etc. Too bad Willander isn’t signed to help & see his skills.

It's not that dire. Trade Pouty for a promising centre and use the extra cap space to sign a UFA or trade for another centre. After the Miller trade, Vancouver was without top two centres for the rest of the season. Someone mentioned that they were only 6 points out of the playoffs without Miller and Pouty's ghosting. Trade him, he's already broken the team. Even Tocchet couldn't face the idea of another season of Pouty.

Not really but these fictitious other C’s are lacking more detail. As for RT on Pouty I’m sure his frustration was truth.

The ufa pool this & next season are not all that exciting. Leaves us to expect some wheeling & dealing has to happen. My gut says to not get hopes up for a top 6 C.

Barzal is a great hockey player, one of the top 30? in the league. Awful value vs Hughes or even maybe Petey if he ever recovers from whatever the (frank) is afflicting him.

I think they'll target him and keep Petey.

I have visions of Willander and a 1st but I guess we'll see. No Bueno for me but this team just knows how to light futures on fire

That's my guess as well.
Maybe add a roster player for a Barzal/Cireli type guy

of course it will be a mistake.

Trading 2 high end assets for a high priced and possibly declining one. It would take about 8 years to build the best team in the league if you continuously poop your pants and accepted trades for roster players and just drafted BPA.

I guess it depends how you measure mistake.
if the aim is to keep Vancouver somewhat competitive and get hughes re-signed, then a trade of futures for a top 6 player could be seen as a win.

I mean, i like the concept, but i'm not sure this is a sound business strategy to have players re-sign with a franchise, encourage fans to attend or create a culture of winning.

I'm sure it works in video games tho.
