Him not signing the reported offer on the table pre deadline wouldn't have prevented him from being able to remain by his family's side during the birth and the time immediately following.

It would have given long term stability and knowledge of where they would be for the next 8 years sure. But in declining the deal, regardless of whether he overplayed his hand costing him money, he didn't have to leave his family or uproot it at such a critical time for them and he can stay in the Toronto area all summer if he chooses. Come training camp time, baby is 4 months or so old and it doesn't matter nearly as much where they have to move to at that point.

You can be angry at his performance, I am too. You can call him greedy and that may also have played into it. But I'm personally not going to dismiss the possibility that the wishes of his wife at that time and maybe of his own to be with her at the most important time of their lives (not everything is about hockey) may have played a role in the decision to say no thanks to Carolina.

Here's hoping the Leafs use that cap space wisely.

Horsey Sauce clearly has zero knowledge of hockey. Even as a Colorado fan I can see, as does everyone else, that Marner is the problem. And I don't really feel he will flourish anywhere else for that matter. Every team he plays against knows that if you bump him a bit he runs to the corner to hide. If Toronto is dumb enough to trade Nylander then I for one hope its to Colorado!

The (frank) he didn't, he bent the team over a barrel to ensure he got a deal which required showing up when it counts, and he reliably did not. He was paid to do a job and didn't, as he's always done.

Imagine watching him ghost the team when it counts for an entire playoffs for the god knows how many times now, and thinking "this guy deserves to be paid more than Nathan MacKinnon".

It's the easiest way to confirm nowadays that someone is clinically stupid and it's incurable.

Obviously if Marner and MacKinnon both hit free agency at the same time, MacKinnon gets more. But markets don’t work that way. Marner is the best player hitting free agency in a year with a higher cap. He’ll get more. Deserving isn’t really a factor.

Are they tanking?

Marner wants money and nothing can be done about it.
He will test free agency and ends up somewhere, but not with the Leafs.
It is terrible asset management, but there is no other options left.
The Leafs have to spend on bottom 6, can't go with the same guys next season so they will need some extra money left.
Time to move on, enjoy the Summer and wait for next season to start.
Nothing is going to change for me, always will be rooting for the Leafs and watch all 82 games, business as usual.
