It's hard not to think about them getting swept two years ago though.

- Scabeh

Agreed.
The canes play a much different style and they have freddy in net, so i guess a sweep isnt out of the question..

But its one bad game after being off for a while.

I don't even think it was that bad of a game.

Carolina controlled the puck in the offensive zone considerably more, they had good shots on net... Bobrovsky made some good saves to keep them off the scoreboard and Florida seemed to score on every decent chance they got.

The Leafs have the talent and skill to put up points during the regular season, but they don't have the toughness or physicality that is required during the playoffs.

Canes played a pretty good game but the Panthers are just playing a type of hockey that's made for the playoffs, scoring goals every possible wayé

I think it's a terrible matchup for Carolina and Florida will beat them in 5.

- Scabeh

If the Panthers cruise past the Canes in 5 does that change a bit of the bad taste the Leafs fans have?

like maybe with a few tweaks they can come back stronger?

Run it back!!

Changes nothing. Leafs didn’t just lose. It was the worst game 7 home loss in NHL history. They didn’t even show up, fought for nothing. Zero heart. The stats of what the core did and don’t do in all the playoff runs are all over the place, check them out. These guys have been together many many years and nothing has changed. Blow it up.

Look, I'm not gonna defend the "run it back" idea because it would be pure insanity at this point. Significant changes must happen for the Leafs to get past teams like Florida and win the cup.

But I will say two things:

1: The 2024-2025 Leafs was a good team. Going to 7 games, even if you finish with two embarassing losses is still getting pretty close to beating what is likely the best team in the east. I mean they defeated Tampa, another juggernaut if you ask me, in only 5 games! I think the available cap space this summer will allow them to acquire different kind of players to better complement the core players that will remain.

2: Toronto can inspire themselves from Florida. A few years ago, they made the playoffs and got eliminated in the 2nd round, getting swept in the process. What did they do? They traded their record-setting first line LW (Huberdeau) and one of their best defensemen (Weegar) in the Tkachuk trade.

Of course it would have been the right time to do that kind of move two years ago when Marner still had a no trade clause or before they signed Nylander but it's never too late to do the right thing and turn their cap space into a similar change.

Meh, its one game against a team that has been sitting around for a while.
The leafs had a 2-0 games lead and our number 1 goalie got knocked out. The leafs let the panthers off the hook cause our core are weak.

- Fakepartofme

First two games against Leafs Florida had C game, Bob was very bad and Leafs took advantage. The games 3 is where the Leafs lost series. They were up 3 - 1 and if the continue to push they would win game 3 and possibly series.
Once Florida turned to their A game they become unstoppable, at least for teams like Leafs, Tampa and Carolina. I totally changing my perspective on these series.
Carolina yesterday was in the same water like Leafs in game 5 and 7.
To beat Florida it is not enough for Leafs to become better, but Florida has to get worse too due to injures, losing players in UFA etc.
I would not be surprised if Leafs will be the only team, who took Florida to game 7.

dont have to blow it up, Marner and JT are ufa, so easy to change direction if thats what they want. just dont re-sign them.

but. I dont know if Tre is the one to do this.

stolen from BS.
Just a reminder that for two firsts (plus Spencer Knight) the Panthers got Jones and Marchand (and a 4th) with $5.5MM retained.

For our two firsts (plus Minten, Grebenkin and a 4th) the Leafs got Laughton and Carlo (plus a 4th and a 7th) with $2MM retained.

this is pretty bad, Florida is good because they make better moves like ^^

Berube will have his say on the roster changes. Seeing how he’s constantly praising Marner, while making backhanded remarks towards Willy, I think it’s safe to assume he prefers Marner or Willy.

- Horsey Sauce

Then you are basically saying nothing - because it doesn't matter if Berube prefers Marner over Willy. Willy, with an NMC, is going nowhere.

Man, you must like to hear yourself talk because it's just a lot of hot air.

Hoping this is sarcasm...but if not.
Nope. It changes nothing. The leafs had a 2 game lead, had a lead in the 3rd game and collapsed. They then imploded in two games after that, completed embarrassing themselves. This core doesnt have it. Its been 10 years. Time for change.

This.
Something doesnt work with these guys....AM, MM and WN all seem to want to be "the guy" and seem to always try to outdo the other (specially in contract talks). Neither seems to have fortitude to carry a team when it counts. You cant have 3 players like that taking up over $30m of your cap space. Two are signed, one isnt and has apparently turned down $13.5m x 8 contract.
Leafs need to take a step back to advance long term IMO. What sucks is that leafs managements have been reckless with 1st round picks and now they dont have any until 2028. So the leafs stepping back only helps other teams.....our rivals.

Yup the laughton trade was and remains absolutely horrible., I didnt like it then and still dont.

But Marchand was only going to 1 or 2 places......Toronto wasnt one of them

They gave up a lot for Laughton, it didn't help that they (Berube) bounced him around a fair bit to try and figure out where he should play in the short window from TDL to playoffs. We can only hope when he has a full season next year he settles in and that trade looks better than it does right now.

Any team, who wants to advance to SCF on the East, have to make some serious steps to have a chance to defeat Florida in playoffs next season.

- alex.TML

Three years ago this statement would’ve been the same but would’ve been talking about TB.
Panthers made those serious steps and here they are. The Leafs could get there, it’s not like they’re miles behind right now. They just need to identify the guys who won’t fully buy in to the team plan and move on from them.
One thing that sticks out to me is how many times I’ve heard Maurice praising the team for all buying in and doing what it takes. “The way I ask them to play is hard work and isn’t (always) fun.” (paraphrased). The Leafs aren’t as far off as the game 7 result makes many think. They made steps towards playing a more “playoff” style this year, now they have to build on that.
The onus is on the Leafs front office to make the right moves this summer. It will only work if everybody is committed to the team above self.

I love that so many other fan bases came to show how much they "don't care about the leafs and how Toronto isn't the center of the hockey universe."

I think this thread proves it is. Thanks for the support guys and gals

They seem to prove everytime something negative happens to the leafs. They are just waiting and waiting but if something positive happens....ghosts.

That's why Toronto is and forever will be the mecca of pro hockey. These guys just watch them from the shadows, likely spending as much time hating the leafs as they do cheering for their own team JUST to poke around when they lose, like 31 teams (some even better than Toronto!) every year.

We'll see some change this year. It's a perfect year for it. Easy to let guys move on.
