@ AA. Regardless of his play or lack thereof, I think that the writing is on the wall for Marner man.

Not wanting/willing to negotiate with the Leafs during the season, then the Leafs asking him to waive his NMC to go to Carolina says to me that both sides are at least somewhat interested in moving on.

Marner's camp is going to want more money than the Leafs are going to want to give him. He'll get it somewhere, but I'd be surprised to see him get it from a contender. I'm thinking along the lines of Detroit/C-Bus/Chicago/Utah.

Maybe he takes less to stay in Toronto but based on previous negotiations with his camp I doubt that will happen. The Steve Dangle Podcast group did a pretty decent dive into this entire situation and his entire history with the Leafs. They essentially said that the fault for the current situation lies both at the feet of Brendan Shannahan but also Marner's camp (not Marner). I'm inclined to agree.

I also think that a Nylander trade should be explored but I think with him NMC and most recent contract signing that's not going to happen. He disappeared just as badly as any other player did in the FLA series. I get sick of his inability or lack of desire to backcheck, play physical, or play defence. Too many times in this series I saw him sacrificing his defensive assignment to blow the zone looking for a stretch pass. At one point early on in game 7 I watched him lazily glide to the bench for a change when TO had forced a turnover and could have had an odd-man rush had he kept engaged in the play.

I don't consider myself a member of Team Marner or Team Nylander, and I am trying to be as objective as I can be. If I was running the team I would be exploring a lot of personnel changes, including both of these two. I think given the current situation and contract statuses we're only going to see one of them leave.

My emotions from the loss have started to subside and I think that I am thinking more clearly now than I was on the weekend. Here's what I think will happen:

- Shannahan will be fired
- Marner will sign elsewhere
- Tavares will stay, but on the cheap and on a team friendly deal
- Matthews will stay, remain captain, and get healthy
- Nylander will stay. Berube will ride him hard next year to improve his defensive side and all-around play
- Reilly will be approached about waiving his NMC and being traded. I'm not sure that he has a lot of value now and I think his play has dropped off dramatically
- Leafs will go hard after guys like Marchand (if he doesn't retire), Ekblad, and Boeser/Bennett
- Holmboy and Jarnkrok will be gone
- Robertson will be traded (I actually want him to stay, but the way he was used in the playoffs was not great)
- Pacioretty will sign league min to play 1-2 more years
- Tanev will be given an A
- Leafs will make moves in the offseason to try and recoup lost draft capital


I could be completely wrong here. Who knows.

Look at a Dallas, a lot of skill, grit, shooting, playmaking distributed through the lineup. They play a different style than FLA, but another well-balanced team doing good things, looking like a contender.

I'm on the fence about JT, like if he signed a discount deal as our 3rd line center, I could see that working out for a few years.

Let's see what Cowan can do as a our Mini-Mitch on the 3rd line with him.

Domi up with Matthews would be a short-term look and while he's not as talented as Marner, he's not afraid of contact either, and can still dish the puck the Matthews, and doesn't need the puck on his stick to be effective like Marner does.
