The Kraken have been granted permission to speak with Leafs asst coach Lambert.

I honestly feel like the coaching staff and management staff both need to be leaned out. I believe both are one of the largest in the NHL?
Perhaps too many voices.

solid article
https://mapleleafshotstov...r-latest-playoff-failure/

but one main point, the Panthers depth is better, which it should be, they spend more on it.

but like I said, the Leafs need to rebuild the bottom 6...without Marner that can happen..a bit easier

Oilers looking good, have to stay disciplined and they should be fine.
It was fun game to watch.

Tre was signed a week before his NT kicked in I believe.....it would have taken huge lady balls to do that.
But I agree the time to move him was before that.

You either let Dubas stick around long enough to do it, or you replace Dubas with a new GM way earlier. Either way, it's entirely on Shanahan.

I dont think the Leafs expected Dubas to walk like he did. I think Dubas was planning to come back but then got a better offer in the meantime and said..fuk it im out

I don't think Dubas walked, I believe he was fired wasn't he?

I heard something about him going around Shanny to try and get complete oversight and control on player movements (Shanny vetoed too many trades apparently). This bombed and Shanny canned him.

Knies, Matthews, Mangiapiane
Elhers, Bennett, Nylander
Tavares, Domi, B. Tanev
Lorentz, Laughton, Jeanott

McCabe, Tavev
OEL, Carlo
Benoit, Myers/Hakanpaa(?)

Stoli
Woll

Dump/trade all players and their cap hits not listed + Marner walking + Rielly traded + Tavares old man deal + Cap increase = the line up above...or really close.

(Getting more creative with a sign and trade of Marner, and Rielly waving for a trade could add better players than listed)

Seems like a lot of change, 5 players, but Tre did that last year pretty much. (Tanev, Lorentz, Laughton, Stolarz, OEL)

And, these are all UFAs, so no trades needed but they all get decent UFA raise - except JT.

Tavares (5), Knies(7.5), Magiapiane(7), Elhers(7), Bennett(8.5), Jeanott(4), B. Tanev(4)

Agree that as much as people love to poop all over Dubas and blame him for everything (and don't get me wrong he owns a lot of blame) the fact Shanny neutered him when he alledgedly realized the mistakes he / the Leafs had made and wanted to start to fix them is telling.

Uncle Lou didn't help but Shanny seemed the most set on 'running it back' than anyone at this point and failed miserably.

This team is close to being a top 4 team, but the biggest issue preventing them from getting there won't be addressed until a top salary or 2 player is moved and that cap space is used to create a more balanced roster a la Florida.

Look at how well Dallas has built a balanced roster and learn from them as well as Florida.

They have Jamie Benn at 9.5M playing 3/4th line wing and gooning it up and brining something to the table that is lacking on the Leafs and doing very little else. He is a -6 with 3 points in 13 playoff games this year and Dallas is a top 4 team and could easily get to and win a cup.

I dont think Dubas would have moved Marner.....I think he wanted to trade Nylander for E. Karlsson....which would have been a huge mistake.
But ya, Shanny let Dubas hang around too long.

we dont know the details...but my best guess on the way it played out

Shanny/leafs were looking to bring him back, but Dubas wanted to take a day or whatever ... he then got an offer from the Pens ...then came back to the Leafs demanding the things you mentioned...cuz he now was in position to do so knowing if the Leafs balked be could jus take the offer from the Pens..a promotion basically.

leafs balked..he bolted to ..a better position

I beleive...it can be seen that way

but imo he had the pens offer in his pocket..before making his demands..where the Leafs said no ("fired him")

so ..yeah I guess you can say that..but if I were in his position...who cares..I got a better offer

I dont mind it, maybe a bit much for Magiapiane and Bennett ( but that may be the cost to get him to Toronto)....and I think you will need someone to replace MR on D. Tanev wont be able to play all year. Maybe Dante Fabbro.
I think B. Tanev is must sign imo.
Hopefully they are short term deals, but with Tre I doubt it

Maybe that occurred. But I think the leafs changed their minds after his presser.

Either way, he was ruining the leafs and Im glad he went on to ruin the pens.

But I think Dubas's fix was moving Nylander out for E.K. It wasnt moving on from Marner.
Dubas had sold his theory on how to build a cup winner.....a theory that had never worked prior...or even tried I guess. Shanny bought into the idea of the core 4...but the players were too similar.
That would have been a horrible trade for the leafs. imo.

Im still of the belief that I dont think Matthews can lead the leafs to a cup as the number 1 guy. Im hoping im wrong.
Gotta wait to see how things look next season.

as it turns out, yeah good move to block trading for EK.
I remember at the time I was game for anything. big shakeup

But Shanny is bad now for blocking moves lol.

Dubas was not moving the team in the right direction... but is Tre now?
same outcomes so far.. will see how he navigates this offseason

Dubas took too long to pivot from his failed vision, kept keefe around a season or two too long....he also handed out some bad contracts (but did make some good trades as well...and I did like him as a person - from what I saw).
I think Tre has finally built a better D core....however, they are old and signed for tool long....but again its the cost of getting them to Toronto I suppose.
Now believing Dubas wasnt moving the leafs in the right direction, doesnt mean Tre totally is with everything either. Tre improved the D and goaltending. Now its time to see if he can improve the forwards. He just completed his 2nd full season and had his hands tied with Marner.
This will be his biggest off season for now.

I’ve had the impression that Shanny didn’t want to give up on the core, believing that it could still work. He also didn’t want Dubas to be able to take proposals to the Board himself and wanted to keep that relationship to himself. Interestingly, the rumour is that he’s going to end up as President and GM with the NYI

if indeed Shanny did block a trade of MM or WN for EK, well then thats good.

I guess unless you would have preferred to have EK this past season and now instead of Mitch walking now

I may ask for some retention from LA but even if they said no I'd seriously consider it to save the 2 M and know he only has 2 years left on his deal.
