Let's be honest, the Canucks are not Cup contenders. This is actually a great value move IF, Kane performs and puts up a 25 / 25 season, and they trade him as a UFA at the deadline. They will get more than a late Ott 4th rounder back. The cap relief for the Oilers sucks yes, but they will just use it to overpay Ehlers or Boeser at 8m...lol

If he can replace Boeser's output, on a 1 year deal, for 1.5m less, and then get assets for him at the deadline? This could be a win. Just mad that we didn't move Boeser for picks at the deadline.

Own rentals only work when you are contending for a Cup. When you are just a bubble team at best, in a clearly down year, keeping Boeser to try to make the playoffs is just a wasted asset. Poor management and I guess ownership decision.

Known locker room issues, personal/legal problems ++ including domestic abuse allegations, takes selfish penalties, doesn’t seem to be a good teammate and pouts when moved down the lineup…
Also, takes up valuable capspace for bigger trades I was hoping for.

There is no upside here, you're helping a division rival, someone who you'll need to beat just to get into the playoffs with their cap problems and you still need to replace Chytil as 2C because he's not reliable. We're down to 7 mil in cap space, this is a desperation move because they don't think they can sign a top 6 winger or center in free agency.

Easier said than done - especially in hindsight.

When teams are in a playoff hunt (like the Canucks were) those type of 'decisions' arnt cut and dry like you mentioned.

Blaming MGMT & given context gets thrown around quite liberally in these precise situations.
