Then you don't trade them. It's really that simple.
Case in point, Rutherford spoke honestly about the potential returns for Boeser and why he wasn't moved. It was deemed irresponsible at the time to not trade him, but he's recently resigned at below market value I dare say.
I know Don probably isn't thrilled, but even he can't hate the deal. Boeser becomes a depth player as the contract ages.
We absolutely need a 2C, as well as Pettersson to return to who he was a year and a half ago. If Petterson doesn't rediscover his game, what happens at 2C matters little. I certainly wouldn't move a bunch of prospects and picks for a 2C.
Those prospects are what has our Dline looking solid moving forward along with some forward help. You build upon that, and hope someone can grab the crown. If the team is good then you add towards the deadline. - golfingsince
Glad they didn’t pay what Granlund cost.
Or Dvorak. Even Suter seems steep tbh.
Free agent Options limited at this point.
Trade for a 3c with potential.
Promote from Abby.
Apparently mgmt are looking to off load Blueger and/or Joshua. |

I’m not so sure we’re not over valuing our guys that we think we can spare, or unproven prospects. I don’t think we get anything for Joshua, Klimovich, Hoglander etc. Even with the Calder cup under his belt, I don’t think Silovs alone brings much if anything. The stink of his recent NHL games still lingers. Personally I think he’s intriguing and between the 2024 playoffs and this Calder run, I hope they don’t give him away. But to get anything we want, it’s gonna have to include Lekkerimaki & Silovs plus imho. It’s just not like ea sports GMs unfortunately. - Sayros

I agree, that's what an OEL buyout costs... pretty much to the dollar.

Especially considering none of these guys actually fill the need of a 2C. |

“First of all, Chytil is doing very well. He probably could have played the last few games of the season, but we didn’t think it made much sense. But he’s 100% ready to go.
“I said all along that we would probably have to do our business through trades. The free agent market is always difficult. It gets more and more difficult as the cap goes up. So we will make a trade today if we think it’s a center iceman that can help us. But if it takes some time, we’ll also wait for that time. But that is a priority for the Canucks right now: to get more depth at center. We do think that we’re okay to start the season, because Adam Foote is okay with Pettersson and Chytil as one and two centres. Then, we got a good young centre in [Aatu] Räty coming – he’s still healing from an injury. And of course, Teddy Blueger is a good veteran centre. With that being said, if we can figure out how to get a centre, we’re going to do that.”

Glad they didn't pick up one of those guys. Still think they're working on a trade, but that can also happen further into the off-season or a quarter of the way through the season like Zadorov. |

Running it back, interesting.
Unless the cap collapses again I don't see a bad deal out there, as if Demko is washed with injury it's LTIR.
If Petey returns to form and Chytl can really exceed expectations it could be a great season.
The quality of depth on the backend entering this season vs last year is night and day. 3 of those guys are young and improving. - golfingsince
Healthy roster would go a long ways. Starts there imo. D depth is looking great. PK still needs to be good or even get better. The PP will be my focus. |

The concerning part for me is I always felt like the M. Pettersson trade took too long to materialize last year, considering we all knew they needed a D before the season even started. I just hope they don't wait too long |

Was he referring to his ( Mitch Marner) disappearing act in the playoffs? |

I don't think their need for a center this year is as pressing as their need for a D last year was. They can (hopefully) get by a bit better with a healthier lineup.
I still think they get something done by the end of summer, mind you. |

If they can get someone by training camp I will be content with the roster. I agree it's not as crippling as last year but still a necessity for playoffs. |
