It’s ok Trevor, the Ritchie bros can be teamates next year. Wranglers have too much talent that can fill that bottom 6 for the Flames next year. I agree though, would rather see Dennis the Menace at this point of the season than Stetcher. Mackey wasn’t playing for Sutter, much like Valimaki wasn’t playing for him. I wish him luck but it’s time to move on.
Coyotes have 31 million in used up capspace for players not dressing for them, they’re bargain bin shopping. I predict they win the Bedard Sweeps. |

Darryl must really be tough on younger defencemen. Mackey has the tools to be a great top four player.
Agreed. Next year will be fun in that respect. Darryl will have no choice but to play ELC guys.
It’s respectable to give veterans the decision whether they play through injury, but you have to wonder if they’d be higher in the standings if Lucic and Stone weren’t playing at 50-75% through much of the season. |

40th 1-goal game out of 68 games for the Flames. Just wow.
We can't even beat the Coyotes. This team ain't going anywhere. Need retool this summer. |

Valimaki looked like a stud. Both of these guys leaving for next to nothing and their thriving on one of the worst teams in the league is a really bad look for Sutter.

Pretty bad when a coach can make or break a player. Remember Greg Gilbert getting rid of Iginla’s center Marc Savard? Or playing Matin St Louis on the 4th line only to watch him walk for zippo? |

Oh man, those memories hurt.
What really hurts is if they bring back this exact team next year, they are 1 million over the cap. Would really be nice to slot Valimaki and Mackey on cheap contracts and trade out a Hannifin.
Sutter has to carry a lot of the blame this year. The whole plan of outshooting the opposition and having possession has not worked, and the defense has been pretty porous.
Keep doing the same thing, and keep getting the same results. At this point, the only thing that has me even a little optimistic about next year is that the Flames only seem to crap the bed every other year. |

Like I said earlier, if next trade deadline were still a bubble team, I would look at moving expiring contracts. Unfortunately, most new GM’s aren’t likely to do this as they’ll want to build not rebuild. Flames have never had a higher pick than Sammy, so always trying to plug holes and stay competitive.

I am just thinking and typing.....but a rebuild might be inevitable.
The best-case scenario, the Flames win a cup next year, and cannot afford to resign all the guys on expiring contracts because they had monster years. But hey, they won the cup. A guy can dream right?
The second best-case scenario, the Flames suck and start selling early. They get pics and start a proper rebuild.
Most probable and worst-case scenario. The Flames are a bubble team but management decides to go all in and trade firsts to upgrade the team to make the playoffs. They do this for Sutter's last Hurrah and all the vets he has brought in. The flames are an easy out in the first round, most players on expiring contracts leave for nothing.
If Tre would have played his cards right, Weegar and Hubs could have fetched a massive haul in a year that has one of the deepest drafts ever. I understand why he gambled and signed them both to long-term contracts, but he lost.
Time for a new GM and a new direction.

Keep up the good work Trevor.
Last time I checked I didn't see Trevor's name in the Flames lineup.
The Corsi is just a more sophisticated way of processing information. A valuable tool for anyone smart enough to know how to use it. |

Totally agree. We missed out not being sellers at the draft to give Tre one last shot.
When I see players like Clayton Keller, who you only get via the draft, making us look slow and unmotivated, I realize just how much we did miss out.
We just lost a promising young defensemen in Mackey for two journeyman..
It's taken 8 years to figure out that Treliving is not a hockey man. |

Agreed with all.
They win most of their puck races, but there is so little room for creativity and imagination with the puck. Seems like Huberdeau and Kadri do their best with less structure. Darryl and the urgency brought on after stumbling through a rough first half of the schedule has seemingly stomped out most of the fun. I’ve taken care of any straggling amount of joy in the dressing room with Corsi.
They might just simply click in their second year with Sutter like Gaudreau and Tkachuk did, but who knows? At least we’re looking at a fairly dramatic offseason. |
