It's the Leafs, they'll be in every pitch to every player for clicks, but sure, why not? |

Canada looked great in the final period, there was hope they got their game. A few dumb penalties, the challenge being the dumbest, cost them the tournament. |

There were definetely some head scratchers in Team Canada's players selection imho. I get they like 19 year olds but sometimes the 18 year olds are just better.
Sennecke, Hage, Yakemchuk, Iginla were all players that should have been given a better look to make this team.
Ice the better players, stop adding less talent for the sake of physicality.
As for Cameron, feels like the time to hang up the board is ripe. The lack of discipline starts with him imho.
And I can't help but mention how Hrabal once again proved he's a very interesting goaltender prospect. |

It took Cameron three games to realize that he should move an undersized guy known for his shooting talent to a shooting position on the PP instead of netfront or as a bumper.

Somehow Porter Martone went from healthy scratch to first powerplay and scored.
What a mess of a coaching job.

And that is just one of many idiotic decisions by the coaching staff.
It's as if they thought he we're Canada we don't need to do anything but show up.

If the Leafs get a good C there is a lot of potential with a McMann-C-Domi line for playoffs |

When 34 comes back it will slot everybody down a role...
Then you can have a choice for the 3rd C. Even putting Domi back in the middle. Not optimum but doable.

This team seemed entitled. The players told the refs to "F**** off" after every penalty they took. Couldn't keep it to themselves and take responsibility once. And the coaching staff would pile on after. And then they wonder why every game was an avalanche of penalties. Certainly didn't help their situation. |

He's young and I'm sure he'll figure it out, but Easton Cowan makes some absolutely astoundingly stupid decisions out there. High motor, pretty good hands, works real hard, seems largely unaware of where anyone else is on the ice most of the time. - BINGO!
Knies had a bad WJC run
Cowan was not bad, the whole team was bad and poorly coached
There were a lot of talented kids that had bad showings
At the end of the day the WJC never should change anyones stock, it is 4-7 games for these kids |

Oh he was fine for the most part, he was just given too much of a prominent role for what he brought to the table. That's not his fault, that's on the coaching/managing staff.
They're the ones that decided to skip practices and morning skates. They're the ones that failed to implement any sort of coherent system. |

Knies' WJC appearance underwhelmed but I didn't think it was bad. One thing Knies always had going for him was his size - which you did want to see used more in the WJC.
It is a short tournament, as you note, and you are often subjected to the coach's role defined for you, your linemates and then other pressures that you feel. In Cowan's case let's note that he did lead this lousy team in scoring. His 1 goal and 2 assists in 5 games was the best Canada could muster - so he's absolutely not to blame for this crapfest we all just saw.
Demonstrably, from what we have seen from him . . . I'm probably most concerned by the fact that he consistently demonstrates a lack of awareness. He has excellent tools - he's a good passer, good skater, competes very hard - but what's going to move him up from a 3rd line guy to a top-6 guy is going to be that awareness / hockey IQ.
Nothing says he can't grow more and nothing says that he doesn't normally have it and just failed to demonstrate at the WJC - twice. Cowan was also exceptional in last year's OHL playoffs and led the Memorial Cup in scoring - so what you see here isn't always what you get.
As a reminder: I thought Hodgson, Drouin, Mantha, Domi and Turris would be stars; I thought Henrique and MacKinnon sucked - off the top of my head. There were many more, I'm sure!

I agree, which is why he did not make the team.
He is a kid that will work hard to learn what he needs to do.
Kadri had an excellent wjc but I do remember early on he seemed to want to be "the guy" and it hindered him early on in his NHL career. I see the same in Cowan. |

This is pretty much the impression I got too. Right now he tries to do too much himself and lets his emotions take control a little too often.
If he can get that under control and learn to use his linemates more, he'll be a legit top 6 threat. If he doesn't, well, a hockey team needs Warren Foegele's too. |
