I think we should definitely be happy with the return here. I as much as I was hoping we wouldn't tie up any more cap into next year, I actually don't mind Descharnais and Heinen.

What I really like is the 1st from NY. There is a good shot they miss the playoffs. There would be nothing better than for the Rangers to end up with the 12th pick this year and then suck worse next year and lottery us into McKenna. I can dream, right?

I personally like the trade and what it represents. Getting a 1st round pick is nice, another reason to root against the Rangers. If tje Rangers pick is top 13, is it unprotected next season?

I personally wouldnt have traded DOC, I dont think he carries much value in the trade and he's a guy I wouldve kept around.

Glad to see we are embracing the reality of the situation. Start the tank job and regroup in the summer. Hopefully Karlsson is next.

My next move would be to find a team that overvalues first round picks and find some young guy(s) to take for it.

That was my first thought, if the pick is unprotected in 2026, I wouldnt say no to another shot at a good lottery pick, but the reality is I think its unlikely the Rangers are this bad again next season. To me, we'd be better off cashing out with like the 15th pick this season. That would give us the flexibility to trade up or down or find a trade to bring in a player for the pick.

Whoever suggested signing Fredrick and Olivier for the 4th line a couple blogs back. You were onto something.

If memory serves me correct, Heinen provided some depth scoring in ‘21-22 even though Sully had him on a short leash & was not gifted quality ice time every night like DOC.

Desharnais - Sully is square peg round hole. He’ll see a few mins a night or be scratched. Sully is adverse to physicality.

Funny, as soon as the Ranger trade went down, I suggested on some YouTube channels that the Canucks would flip the draft pick..didn't take them long.

Imama & Desharnais *could* make the remaining games at least worth watching.

Well I wanted Frederic for 3C and Olivier for the 4th, but doesn't this pretty much eliminate the chances of that happening now?

We now have Heinen, Accari, Lizotte, Hayes & assuming they resign the untraceable Tomasino, that is already 5/6 of our bottom 6 next season. The problem is that none of those guys are strong third liners, if you want to be good, all are fringe 3/4's.

So I have to assume we are trading someone out of the bottom 6. Lizotte is the best player/cap value so I'm going to guess he gets moved.

They are both coveted players and not signing in Pittsburgh.

Good move by Pens to start the tear down. As far as Rangers pick goes you need Rangers to just miss the playoffs they wont be a lottery team next year. I still cant believe Crosby is going sit there and waste his next 3 yrs as Pens rebuild

Goal is his final year being a very aggressive one VIA free agency so we are going to keep some cap space going into next year (so expect a bunch of one year deals like this offseason). Just from what I gathered from a previous source discussion. It does make me raise an eyebrow with McDavid, Kaprizov, Eichel, Necas, Laine, Connor Bedard is also a RFA.

Malkin probably retires instead of hitting FA (or maybe comes back as a 3rd line center).

I kinda felt as though this trade was a weird one. I was expecting young talent (Hoglander) to come back our way and when I first saw the deal it threw me off guard.

Heinen- is replacing DOC in the bottom six, but I still feel we have WBS talent who could replace him. Disappointed he has one more year on his deal. He was added in the deal to make the cap hit work.

Desharnais - is interesting. He played very well for Edmonton last season and played 17 minutes per night. I felt he was one of Edmonton's stronger defensemen last season.


Fernstrom - is probably my favor player acquired. He was a top 10 prospect in Vancouver (even though they don't have a strong prospect pool). I feel he was moving up the ranks. He had a very strong development camp for Vancouver. He is above average at shooting the puck and makes some eye popping passes. He could be a top 6 winger in the future.

It was probably Hoglander + a 2nd or the package we got with the 1st. I like this deal better.

Agree on all of your assessments. I don't know much about Fernstrom, but Dubas sounded really high on him. And Dubas has found some good talent in the draft so hoping he turns into something.

I knew we were going to end up with Descharnais. And I don't mind it. It could be interesting if Bruinicke makes a big step this off-season and makes the team. Not likely as his broken wrist probably sets him back a good bit. Ideally Descharnais is our 7th D.

Fernstrom at times during last year he had a first round grade. A lot of analysis liked the pick for Vancouver from what I am reading. He was ranked their #9 prospect and here is a good write up on him.

Makes sense. With the Cap rising so much gonna be a lot of money floating out there for free agents.Dont think Malkin has much left in the tank.

The only thing that will keep them from the playoffs this year and from being a serious contender next year is a Shesterkin injury. They will have $$ to throw at free agents this summer and will add Perreault next yr.

That's my thinking as well. NY is too talented not to turn it around next year. Rooting for them to just miss the playoffs and get the pick now and get another McGroarty/Yager level prospect.

How heart breaking it would be for NYR fans if it ended up being a 14-15th overall pick in the draft outside of the protection range. I think that would be our best case scenario. Or if NYR plays well and it becomes a lower pick, maybe packaging the pick for a young talent.

Good trade for the Pens. A second and a third was my minimum desire for Pettersson. They got a third from a team that might not make the playoffs and could be a little better than what you typically get for a rental. The prospect seemed to have a second round grade. Mostly offensive type that might flame out, might find a role as a righty on the PP. Just adds to the potential forwards.

Heinen ably replaces DOC. Similar third line forward who kills penalties and can go hot and cold any given season. Pens needed a guy like that and the salary isn't that bad with the rising cap.

2M for a bottom pairing physical defensive D is fine. Gives St. Ivany someone to compete against and needed depth. That spot has been black hole this year.

Pettersson has been a great Pen and will be hard to replace, but that's where we are. Was a pleasure watching him blossom into such a solid defenseman. I enjoyed watching DOC'S growth too. Disappointing how he struggled this year, but rooting for both their successes in the future.
